Thank you for helping change our clients' lives                                     View this email in your browser
Thank you for your interest in providing pro bono representation to victims of intimate partner abuse, dating violence, and stalking, who are seeking to file a civil Temporary Protective Order in Fulton County Superior Court.

Please understand that these are cases we feel are strongly in need of representation. We do our best to prepare and place as many cases as possible with limited resources. Representation by trained volunteers makes all the difference to these clients and we greatly appreciate the time and effort spent on each case. Your response to blasts and participation in this program is vital to the work we do and changing the lives of survivors of intimate partner abuse.

Below, please find summaries of cases that we currently have available for placement.

If you would like to take a case, please respond directly to this email or contact Volunteer Engagement Manager Lilli Crowe at lcrowe@avlf.org.

Case 1: Family Violence Protective Order
Hearing will be held on Zoom
Hearing time: 12:30 PM
Summary: The parties share one child, and Respondent father has not legitimated. They've also lived together in the past. The Respondent has acted abusively towards the Petitioner for the last 16 months of their 3 year relationship- his violence has been escalating, and he has strangled and punched the Petitioner repeatedly during that time. On multiple occasions, the Petitioner has attempted to give the Respondent a chance to spend time with their child, and he has reacted with extreme violence towards her in order to control her activities and her life. The Petitioner ended the relationship in early August 2022 after suffering the abuse. Since then, the Respondent has begun a harassment campaign against her over both social media and texts, in which he has sent numerous provocative photos to family and friends and posted them on social media, as well as sending threats to harm the Petitioner.

In July 2021, DFCS investigated the Respondent after he openly attacked the Petitioner while she was in the hospital. Nurses who witnessed the altercation had the Respondent removed. In March 2021, the parties were in the hospital following the birth of their child. The Respondent verbally abused the Petitioner by berating and insulting her to such an extent that the nurses who witnessed it refused to allow the Petitioner to leave with the Respondent out of fear for the safety of the Petitioner and the child.

Case 2: Family Violence Protective Order
Hearing will be held on Zoom
Hearing time: 9:30 AM
Summary: The parties share one minor child together, and the Respondent father has not legitimated. The parties were living together at the time of filing this TPO. The Respondent began physically abusing the Petitioner when she was pregnant with their now 3 year old daughter- he punched her all over her body, and manually strangled her on at least 3 occasions. She has asked him to leave and tried to break up with him multiple times, but he refuses. On September 13, 2022, the Petitioner told the Respondent that she did not want to be with him, and he responded that the only way that she was leaving him would be "in a box." On July 26, 2022, the Respondent punched the Petitioner in the face in front of their 3 year old daughter. He had come home earlier and the Petitioner refused to unlock the door, so he kicked it in and threw 2 TVs and her phone on the ground, breaking all of them. Recently, the Respondent came to her job looking for her and has been constantly calling her.

Case 3: Stalking Protective Order
Hearing will be held on Zoom
Hearing time: 11:00 AM
Summary: The parties dated for almost two years, and broke up in 2017. Since then, the Respondent has been repeatedly contacting the Petitioner, saying that he wants her back, that he cannot live without her, and that his life depends on her getting back together with him. She has blocked him on every platform that he has contacted her on, however the Respondent continues to make new email addresses and find new methods of contacting her. The Petitioner has explained to the Respondent repeatedly that she is not interested in communicating with him, and the last time she responded to one of his messages was in 2018.

On August 4, 2022, the Petitioner was at a heavily populated concert, and was wearing a mask. She and her brother were approached by a young woman that they did not know. This young woman told the Petitioner, "I was told to give you this," and handed her a package. The package contained an iPod, headphones, a charger, and a seven page note from the Respondent explaining that he wanted her back. The Petitioner currently lives overseas, and in the letter, the Respondent said that he would "cross seas" for the Petitioner. The Petitioner is in fear that he might attempt to find her in her country of residence and she fears for her safety.
