Welcome from SWS and Film Noir UK!

Hello all! Firstly, a massive welcome to the very first South West Silents and Film Noir UK newsletter. It's been something which has been in the works for quite sometime (as early as 2015 in fact) and we are thrilled that you can join us at this very special moment.

This newsletter will give YOU (someone who loves classic cinema as much as we do) the chance to find out what we have coming up in the next few weeks, months or even years!

But the SWS monthly newsletter isn't just an advert for what we are doing. Every newsletter will include some free bonus content involving the ever-expanding world of silent cinema and film noir. This content will include archive interviews, vintage programmes and forgotten gems from key international film archives from around the world!

So welcome once again and we hope to see you very soon!

The Extras
Film Noir UK: Suspense
Suspense Episode:" Script by Mark Brady"

Conceived as a potential radio vehicle for Alfred Hitchcock, 'Suspense' was a radio series of epic proportions. Aired on CBS from 1942 to 1962 and considered by many to be the best mystery drama series of the golden age, 'Suspense' is often referred to as "Radio's Outstanding Theater of Thrills". It focused on suspenseful thrillers starring some of the biggest names in Hollywood.

To tie in with our Stanley Kubrick Film Noir Double Bill at Curzon Cinema & Arts our episode of 'Suspense' for this month is "Script by Mark Brady" starring The Killing's Marie Windsor.

South West Silents: Silent Film Clip of the Month
This is the space to find those short silent film rarities from some of the key international film archives. As some of us will be traveling to Pordenone, Italy for Le Giornate Del Cinema Muto 2022 at the end of the week we decided to take you to the shores of the Adriatic Sea in 1914.
The Venetian Shores (1914)

Blissful scenes of tourists arriving by boat and then sea bathing on a beach in the Venetian lagoon. The common view that the dress and moral values of the Edwardian age create an unbridgeable divide between them and us are put to flight by these candid beach scenes. What's astonishing about this travelogue is its matter-of-factness. The dress may be more modest than todays, but the bathers all look very relaxed and the kids seem to be coping fine without the factor 50.
