Letter from the Head of School

Dear RIS community,
Over the last month, we have worked through the selection process for the next secondary principal* (6th to 12th grade) for the 2023–2024 school year. Once we posted this position, more than 70 applicants expressed their interest. At this point, the top 12 candidates were identified as the best fit for the position. From there, our hiring team identified three finalists for the position. Each of our finalists was interviewed by our hiring committee.

The hiring committee consisted of our School Director, Head of School, ES/MS Principal, an RIS school board member, a parent representative, an MS teacher, a HS teacher, and our TRC representative. Our MS and HS teaching faculty were invited to a one-hour session to ask questions of each of the candidates. We also had a team of MS and HS student leaders interview each of the candidates. It was a very thorough process that involved all of our stakeholders.
I am pleased to announce that Dr. Nathan Meisner has been selected to lead our secondary school as principal for the 2023–2024 school year. Dr. Nathan is in his fourth year at RIS and has served in several roles here. He was hired as the HS Dean of Students, then shifted to being the ES Assistant Principal. Last year, he became the HS Assistant Principal.
Dr. Nathan’s professional background includes working at Escuela Bella Vista in Venezuela from 2007 to 2012. His duties there included teaching in middle and high school. He served as the head of department, the IB coordinator, and the CAS coordinator. From there, Dr. Nathan worked at the American Community School in Abu Dhabi from 2012 to 2019, where he served as a head of department, HS Dean of Students, and HS Assistant Principal.
Dr. Nathan left Abu Dhabi in 2019 to join the RIS community and is here with his family. His wife Susana is our HS Spanish teacher and head of department for modern languages. Their son Mario is in KG, and they just welcomed their second son, Alessandro, into the world at the end of last year.
During Dr. Nathan’s time here at RIS, he has demonstrated great leadership, care, and compassion for our students, faculty, parents, and community. Undoubtedly, he is dedicated to serving this community with excellence. Please help me congratulate Dr. Nathan when you see him for his appointment as Secondary Principal in 2023–2024!
