Let's embrace YIMBY for World Homelessness Day!
As we approach World Homeless Day on 10th October, it is timely to remember that every home needs to be built somewhere, and every time social housing proposals are delayed or refused, some family or individual, somewhere in Tasmania is missing out on the home they need.

Shelter Tas was disappointed recently to see the Glenorchy Council reject a new 18-home residential complex that would help address the urgent need for more social housing in this community. This outcome reinforces the need to change the conversation from NIMBY – not in my backyard, to YIMBY – yes, in my backyard. For inclusive and vibrant communities, every neighbourhood and local council area needs to include homes for all kinds of households and income levels.
Shelter Tas will be building on our previous work, as well as continuing to consult with the sector, our national peaks and policy committee on The Tasmanian Housing Strategy - with consultation on the twenty-year Strategy open until 21 October. And in *breaking news* - yesterday the Homes Tasmania Bill 2022 amendments passed Parliament, so we look forward to continuing our work with the State Government on the new Homes Tasmania into the future.

Tasmanian Housing Strategy Discussion Paper
|
|
|
A twenty-year Tasmanian Housing Strategy is being developed, and a discussion paper has been released.
Sector feedback is important to inform this strategy, and Shelter Tas will be making a submission, which is due on 21 October. We are currently holding a range of consultations with housing and homelessness services across the state, please contact Cynthia at policy@sheltertas.org.au to have your say on housing priorities, initiatives and solutions or if you require any further information.

Productivity Commission's National Housing and Homelessness Agreement Review
|
|
|
Released today, the Productivity Commission's review of the National Housing and Homelessness Agreement (NHHA) reinforces Shelter Tas' advocacy around the urgent need for more affordable rentals, in particular, more community and public housing to make up 10% of all homes in Tasmania.
Commissioner Malcolm Roberts stated that “the NHHA is intended to improve access to affordable housing, but it is ineffective. It does not foster collaboration between governments or hold governments to account. It is a funding contract, not a blueprint for reform.”
With the private market becoming less affordable, demand for homelessness services and social housing is rising. The Review showed that over the life of the NHHA, housing affordability has deteriorated, particularly for people renting in the private market. The median low-income renter spends over a third (36%) of their income on rent, and about 1 in 5 low-income households are left with less than $250 after paying their weekly rent.

2023-23 Budget Consultation
|
|
|
Submissions to the 2023-24 State Budget Consultation are due on 14 October, noting that Treasurer Ferguson has advised that submissions made after that date will still be considered.
Shelter Tas will be making a submission on behalf of the housing and homelessness sector. Please send any suggestions and ideas to policy@sheltertas.org.au.

Casual Relief Support Worker - Launceston Women's Shelter
The advertised position includes working day shifts as relief for the permanent Children’s and Women’s Support workers when they are on leave.
Requirements include a relevant degree or diploma qualification, as outlined in the selection criteria (applications are also open to Social Work students). A current driver's license, police check, WWVP card and first aid certificates are also essential.

Parity Magazine Call for Contributions

Parity magazine is the Council to Homeless Persons' national publication, and they are currently seeking contributions for their October edition - Towards a New National Homelessness Strategy.
This edition represents an opportunity to clearly articulate to our new National Government the range of outcomes-focused solutions to homelessness that could be adopted in a National Strategy to end homelessness in Australia.
All contributions should be submitted as Word documents to parity@chp.org.au. Contributions can be up to 1,600 words (double page spread) or 800 words for a single page article. Images Matter: Mindframe Guidelines for Image Use Training

Join Everymind and the National Mental Health Commission for the launch of Images Matter: Mindframe Guidelines for Image Use on 6 October 2022.
These new guidelines are a practical, research-informed resource, designed to support the use of images in public communications about mental health, mental ill-health, suicide and self-harm and alcohol and other drugs (AOD).
They are designed to inform, support and empower media and others to use images in ways that minimise harm, stigma and discrimination while maximising diversity of representation and help-seeking behaviour.
The launch will be held via Zoom webinar, 12:30 – 1:30pm AEDT on Thursday 6 October 2022 and hosted by Sophie Scott (national medical reporter for the ABC), who will be joined by a panel of guest speakers.

National Webinar Series: Housing First Principles for Australia

The Brisbane 2032 Olympics and Paralympic Games are ten years away but planning for them has already commenced. Queensland Shelter has delivered a report called Go for Gold, encouraging a comprehensive suite of solutions to housing supply and affordability. A Legacy Learning Series has also been developed to accompany the report.
The 19 October session presents the housing legacy and intentional approaches to inclusion in employment through Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. Click on the event dates above to find out more.

Lifeline Training Available

As part of Lifeline's DV-Alert training package, the 1-day DV-Aware workshop offers domestic and family violence response training for frontline workers.
Led by experienced trainers dedicated to reducing violence against women and their children, the DV-Aware interactive workshop provides a safe space to learn, connect, and be empowered to recognise and respond confidently to those in crisis.

Essential Community Services Fuel Relief Program
|

|
The Tasmanian Government has established the Essential Community Services Fuel Relief Program as a relief package for not-for-profit organisations to help ensure essential support services for Tasmanians in need can continue, uninterrupted.
The total funding pool available for eligible organisations under Round Two of the Program is $135,000; with each eligible organisation able to apply for a maximum of $1,000.
The Program will provide a reimbursement that covers twenty percent of eligible fuel costs for the period from 1 July to 31 October 2022. Under the program, eligible organisations will receive $20 for every $100 spent on fuel costs for Essential Community Services, with a maximum amount of $1,000 available per applicant.

Anti-Poverty Week is in its 20th year, and community service organisations are being asked to lend their support around events and initiatives.
If you and your organisation would like to engage with and support Anti-Poverty Week, to be held between 16 and 22 October this year, you can:
- Sign-up to Anti-Poverty Week newsletters
- Pledge to halve child poverty
- Urge all parliamentarians you engage with to commit to halving child poverty by 2030
- Use the hashtags #EndChildPoverty, #APW22, #AntiPovertyWeek and share relevant content on social media
- Nominate a direct contact in your organisation to liaise with the Anti-Poverty Week committee, who can join the group of communicators to stay in the loop on Anti-Poverty Week activities. To do so, please email ed@antipovertyweek.org.au
- Share your logo with APW so that they can include it on their website and acknowledge your organisation as a supporter.
