Executive Director Updates: YOU Made it Possible that we Serve
Let me begin by saying that all of us here at GHEP are very fortunate to have the opportunity to serve our community, local, national, and global. Every program that we deliver brings inner joy, inner satisfaction, and the yearning to do more for those we serve. In this issue of our monthly Community News, we provide quick updates on our stewardship.
  • Our team has been hard at work. Our baby diaper program continues to serve hundreds of families. We've distributed over 60,000 diapers.

  • Our Family Tree Adoption Program is on track to plant 500 free trees for Prince George's County residents this fall.

  • Our public health workforce development program, the Public Health 360 program, continues to graduate fellows who go on to serve in public health around the world. Registrations are open and ongoing.

  • Our team welcomed our inaugural Digital Environmental Fellow, Juliana, who will be serving our community for the next 12 months. You'd be happy to meet Juliana! She comes ready to serve our community.
We couldn't have accomplished any of these milestones without you. Your donations, telephone calls, and volunteer hours have been the engine being all these accomplishments. We cannot do without you. Yes, with YOU, we did them. Together, we will continue to serve with love, respect, and passion.

Please consider making a donation today, if you are able!

Onwards together and best wishes,
Your Team GHEP
500 Free Trees to be Planted for Prince George’s County Homeowners this Fall
Yes, it is at last fall. Welcome to fall. Our enthusiastic Family Tree Adoption Program crew is hard at work getting things ready to plant another batch of hundreds of native trees across Prince George's County. Our target is to plant no less than 500 trees for County residents. Yes, 500 trees.

We look forward to expanding our audience further as we make new contacts daily. Dozens of people will experience the joy of a new, young tree in their yard that will bless generations to come. We are ready for fall–our target is to get all of your trees on the ground by the end of November 22. We will host a community tree planting demonstration on October 15, 2022. Watch out for the information and join us. Complimentary refreshments will be provided. It will be a family event, bring the kids. We will have clean facemasks ready for those who want them.

If you, a neighbor, or someone you know haven’t put in your reservation, please hurry now and get them in by completing a reservation form. Thanks to our County and CBT partners, all trees are free worth over $500.

GHEP Diaper Program Distributes 75,000 Diapers Supporting Babies and Families in DMV
Our maternal and child health baby diaper program continues to serve thousands of babies, mothers, and families. As of last August, our program has distributed over 75,000 diapers supporting 100s of families from Maryland, DC, and Virginia. Thanks to this program, babies will have an opportunity to grow and thrive without being wet. Our County mothers/families remain our priority but no families are turned away.

This season, our compassionate team continues to provide diapers to the most vulnerable of women. Specifically, we are continuing to target the diaper-need population, women struggling with financial needs. If you could benefit or you know a family who can benefit from the program, ask them to sign up on the website here

Your generosity can ensure our programming continues to thrive and serve the largest population possible. Please chip in today–every dollar counts so we can keep our little ones clean and healthy. You can donate directly from major shopping websites such as Walmart, Costco, Lidle, etc. Find out how to support

How to Tackle Vaccine Hesitancy Among Minority and Underserved Communities
Nothing could be as urgent as prenatal health, especially in the case of life-and-death situations such as the diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (DTP) vaccine, which protects against life-threatening diseases that decimated early childhood lifespans in the early 20th century. Yet, vaccine hesitancy for ethnically marginalized pregnant women occurs at high rates and follows familiar lines of disparities according to new research. You can read more about this new study and what could be done to address vaccine hesitancy here.
Meet Juliana, GHEP's First Digital Environment Fellow!
We're happy to announce that Juliana Schifferes, BA, has joined GHEP as our inaugural Digital Environment Fellow (DEF). In this position, she will be working to support GHEP’s strategic planning and communications around its environmental sustainability programs.

Juliana has tremendous experience across the fields of the environmental movement, disability rights, and formal politics. She comes to us via the Chesapeake Conservation Corps program sponsored by the Chesapeake Bay Trust.

Public Health 360 Fellows Graduate with Flying Colors, Receive Counsel from Riverdale Mayor and HHS Director to Transform their Countries
Our global public health training program, Public Health 360, has graduated nearly 30 fellows. These experts will go on to serve communities here in the USA and across the world. Graduates come from the U.S., Canada, Nigeria, Ghana, Burundi, Myanmar, Fiji, and Australia, to mention but a few.

Public Health 360 graduands were lucky this year. They had two excellent commencement speakers: Dr. Alan K. Thompson, the mayor of GHEP’s hometown Riverdale Park, Maryland–and just as significantly Dr. Morissa Rice, the Deputy Director of Compliance and Program Monitoring at Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) at DHHS. They imparted important lessons to the cohort: focus on the population outcomes, listen to the community, and believe in your own worth. Read more about the graduation ceremony and the Public Health 360 program.
