Hey, everyone! I’ve been trying to cut back on electricity because of my ridiculous bill last month, but I also live on the top floor, have a lot of windows and hate sweating. So, it’s not looking good for me this month. Scroll down for why all of our electricity bills are looking bleak.

What Houston's Talking About

💪 Faith & Fitness

Since the pandemic, a new workout group combining faith, exercise and community is growing in popularity across the country, but specifically with men in Katy. Out in the suburbs, men are gravitating towards the workout community, saying it helps them build deep friendships. [New York Times]

😔 Teacher Missing

Michelle Reynolds, a 6th grade teacher in Aldine ISD, has been missing since Thursday. Anyone with information should contact the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office. [ABC-13]

💡 Electricity Bill Blues

If you’ve noticed your electricity bill going up significantly, you’re not alone. Bill prices continue to rise at a crazy rate because of a spike in natural gas prices, with most twelve-month plans costing more than they did last year.  [Houston Chronicle]

🖥️ Megan & Mental Health

The popular Houston rapper, Megan Thee Stallion, has launched a website to provide mental health resources in conjunction with her new album “Traumazine.” The website lists links and phone numbers to mental health organizations and hotlines and also has a therapist locator.  [Houston Public Media]

Urban Almanac: Soapberry Tree

Patti Bonnin, a senior naturalist at Houston Arboretum, writes:

“As you drive in the Woodway parking loop, you may notice a tree with clusters of yellow fruit high up in its crown. This is the only Soapberry tree onsite at the Arboretum. The fruit ripens in the fall and is poisonous if ingested. Why is the tree called Soapberry? The fleshy part of the fruit contains the alkaloid saponin which has been used as a soap substitute. Native Americans also used the seeds to make buttons or beads for necklaces, and the wood was used for basket-making.”

Gripes: Construction & Crosswalk Woes

Maria writes, “I have always enjoyed the view of the downtown skyline from the bridge crossing White Oak Bayou southbound on Durham from the Heights. If I took a quick turn to the left, I could see downtown shrouded in clouds or sparkling against a vivid blue sky after the arrival of a cool front. They've built a big old apartment complex precisely blocking the view! Of course the plex is in the flood zone, yes it's on piers, but where will residents move their cars when the next flood comes? Progress? I don't think so. Why can't we have buffer no-build zones along the banks of the bayous knowing what will come?!”

Gisele on the crosswalk by Glassell School,I really enjoy bringing out-of-town guests here. I love that there's an effort to encourage walking with the crosswalk over Montrose, but wow do drivers zoom right through it all the time! So yeah, combining this email with a gripe hoping that there is more attention given to these stopping crosswalks. Drivers, pay attention!”

Barbara writes, “19th Street in general -- it's narrow, crowded, not well-lit, people park along it, sometimes taking part of the lane because there's no paved verge and it's all wet and muddy. Now, 20th Street has construction on it so even the Metro is diverting to 19th Street. Can't wait until the 11th Street narrowing for the bike lane goes in and makes all this even worse.”
