exciting news is best shared with friends, so you can be excited too!

Peggy Plet & the Black Presence in Berlin Walking Tour have been nominated for a "Public Education and Engagement" Heritage Award by the Architectural Conservancy of Ontario. Thank you to Kae Elgie for the nomination!!

As you know, it is my hope that Stroll Walking Tours is committed to telling stories and sharing histories that have been untold, dismissed or forgotten. We want to dig into stories beyond the dominant Euro-centric, white, German and Mennonite narratives commonly told about our cities and region – there were women, Indigenous peoples and Black people here too! and we want to talk about it.

From the nomination:

“The dominant and celebrated narrative of white German settlers who built this city left little room for any other histories,” Plet observed. She set out to change this.

Digging into historical databases and archives was challenging; pulling out the stories was even harder. There was a complete lack of historical documents written by Blacks, so Plet was forced to rely on history written from white perspectives. And even after she had pieced together the stories of the Black teachers, business people, lawyers and politicians who impacted Kitchener’s history, there were no physical markers left of their presence. With no physical buildings or plaques for people to identify where Black history existed in the Kitchener community, a walking tour, accompanied by photos of buildings that once stood, was the best that could be done.

Uncovering Kitchener’s Black heritage has changed Plet’s sense of belonging. “The walking tour made me view the city differently. It was powerful to realise that 200 years ago, Black people walked the same streets in downtown Kitchener that I walk today on my way to work.”

We'll let you know of Friday!

October is a BEAUTIFUL time of year for a walking tour, so let's hop to it!

FROM 'BUSY BERLIN' TO TECH CORRIDOR - Thurs October 3 @ 4:30 - 6:00 pm
We think of business or industry “clusters” as a modern phenomenon, with Waterloo Region’s technology cluster as a prime example. Yet, as we walk through Downtown Kitchener’s Innovation District, we follow the footsteps of the people of “Busy Berlin,” a largely German 19th century community that worked in equally successful clusters for their time.

BLACK PRESENCE IN BERLIN - Friday October 14 @ 3:30 - 5:00 pm
Meet some of Berlin’s, now Kitchener’s earliest Black settlers: entrepreneurs, teachers, domestic workers, & lawyers who lived and contributed here.
**Also Friday October 28

CAMBRIDGE MURAL WALK - Saturday October 15 @ 2:00 - 3:30 pm
We’ll visit 15 colourful murals created in the past decade ranging from street-level to 4-story beauties. Hear about the Cambridge International Street Art Festival that generated works by international street artists and meet local artists too. Come stroll the side streets and alleys with us to see what outdoor art contributes to a downtown core!
**Also Saturday October 29

Mount Hope Cemetery Walk - Saturday October 15 @ 4:00 - 5:30 pm
An atmospheric walking tour of Kitchener’s Mount Hope Cemetery, it's early history and the ‘who’s who’ etched in stone over 150 years in Mount Hope Cemetery.

Historic St. Jacobs - Sunday October 16 @ 11:30 am - 1:00 pm
This town has made a big name for itself, and the story is best told through intriguing local tales: the milling company that pioneered new technology in 1875; the early schoolteacher from Sierra Leone, the woman whose love for books built the library; the horse that delivered the mail for decades and a hardware store that became a nation-wide company.
**Every Thursday & Sunday until the end of November!

Need an event for your work team? Birthday party? Anniversary? Family-in-town visit? Stroll has you covered! Being outdoors together as a group will invoke some school field trip vibes (hopefully positive ones!) and give you the chance to explore the city, learn a few things, share a few laughs and leave feeling healthier, happier and smarter!
