September 2022

Much have I travelled in the realms of space
Past supergiants and dying galaxies,
With floating rubble tossed on cosmic seas
A million miles from Earth’s familiar face.
A watcher of the skies, I can record
The birth of dust-enshrouded stars, long dead;
Imploding voids on which black holes have fed
Behind celestial borders, unexplored.
Time-travelling, I shall complete my task,
Revealing scenes beyond imagination
To catch the first birth-pangs of our creation –
A triumph for the team. And yet I ask:
An image of the ancient past unfolds
But who can picture what the future holds?

“The Cosmology of Peace”

By Thomas Berry, from The Dream of the Earth (1988)

We are living in the midst of great tensions around the planet. This situation is now being called the "polycrisis." Berry's essay, which is the concluding chapter in The Dream of the Earth, offers penetrating insight into how to manage such tensions with creative foresight.

“My proposal is that the cosmology of peace is presently the basic issue. The human must be seen in its cosmological role just as the cosmos needs to be seen in its human manifestation. This cosmological context has never been more clear than it is now, when everything depends on a creative resolution of our present antagonisms.”

Reflection

Sam King recently shared a reflection at the Shoreline Unitarian Universalist Society on what the James Webb Space Telescope can teach us about belonging to our planetary home. Perhaps, as Dr. Sarbmeet Kanwal suggests, we may be entering a new Earthrise moment.

"The Integral Education Panel on Ecological and Cosmological Education"
Hosted by Theodore Richards
Featuring Missy Lahren, Sam King, Bryan Pannill, Matt Switzer, and Karie Crisp Vazquez

“The paradox that lies at the heart of religion and nature – and this is the question we are indeed grappling with right now – is how to retain a sense of our connection to the world around us, the world we can touch and feel and taste and also to the world, the planet, as a whole. This is, in many ways, the challenge that climate change has presented us with. Our cosmos is the planet now, and we must consider the spaces in which we teach and learn and grow together are metaphors for the Earth as a whole.”
