Our regular biweekly newsletter will be published on Monday (weather gods willing), but we are publishing this interim newsletter to make you aware of a County meeting occurring on Monday so you have time to submit your comments.

On Monday, Oct 3rd, at 4:00 pm, the Charleston County Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) will hear two sets of cases.  One set of cases is for parcels located between Edendale and Edenborough Roads.  The other set of cases is for parcels located on or near River Road near the airport.  Comments are due by noon on Friday, Sep 30th.

If you live on or near Edendale and Edenborough Roads the first set of cases should be of interest to you.  The applicable parcels are shown in red in the diagram above.

Case BZA-08-22-00607 is a special exception request for resource extraction/mining (a sand mine).  Case BZA-08-22-00608 is a variance request to reduce the required 100 ft buffer to 50 ft and to reduce the required buffer for the mine haul road from 90 ft to 10 ft.

It appears that since 1997 the parcels have been used for sand mining, but the required special exceptions and variances were never applied for.  According to the applicant "This request will include retroactive approval for areas where mining has been completed, approvals for current excavation that has been stopped as well as approval for future segments planned for resource extraction."

If you live near this area, we encourage you to submit your comments by noon on Friday and to attend the Monday BZA meeting.

If you drive on lower River Roadlive on Starfish Drive, Exchange Landing Road, or Burden Creek Road, or live in Stonoview then the second set of cases should be of interest to you.  The applicable parcels are shown in red in the diagram above.

These cases are for the Charleston Water System's (CWS) extension of their water main from Stonoview to JZI for commercial development at JZI and for residential development within the City of Charleston.  The residential development includes the "Wooddale" development by River and Plow Ground Roads for 430 houses.  All proposed work is within the CWS's utility easement.

Case BZA-08-22-00609 requests a variance to encroach more than 25% of the protected area of a 25” diameter grand live oak tree.

Case BZA-08-22-00610 requests a variance to encroach more than 25% of the protected area of two scenic trees and to remove six scenic trees.  River Road is a designated Scenic Road that requires protection of all trees 6 inches or greater in diameter that are located within the right-of-way.  The encroachment is for sweet gum trees and the removal is for sweet gum and black gum trees.

If you drive on lower River Road or live near this area, we encourage you to submit your comments by noon on Friday and to attend the Monday meeting.

Email your comments to bza@charlestoncounty.org by noon on Friday, Sep 20th.  Include the case numbers in the subject line.

The meeting will be held at 4045 Bridge View Drive, North Charleston.  It will also be streamed live here.
