Thursday, November 10, 3:00 PM: East Window Restoration, St John’s Church Tisbury

The east window of a church, directly above the altar, is the most hallowed place
within the building and invariably received the most artistically and theologically
significant stained glass. At St John’s in Tisbury, a fine example of an English medieval parish church, dating back to the Normans in the 12th Century, the East Window is in
critical need of repair.

Sadly, restoration of the glass is not financially realistic. As a result the decision was
made to replace the damaged glass rather than returning it to the window in its deteriorated state. This presents a wonderful opportunity to create a new memorial window. The parish of Tisbury (of which Chilmark is a part of) is approaching the sister communities in Tisbury, West Tisbury and Chilmark, Massachusetts, with the idea of creating a magnificent link between our communities by inviting you to reserve one of the lancet windows to memorialize the link between us as well as the memory of your loved ones. Alongside the window we are planning for a stunning memorial book to record the names of the sponsors and the loved ones they memorialize, a record to last for centuries that will be be on display in St John’s Church.

Tom Denny, an internationally renowned stained glass artist, was commissioned with the design. Tom is currently working on a commission for Trinity Church, Wall Street,
New York, whose churchyard is home to the gravesite of Alexander Hamilton. His
work can be found in Durham, Hereford, Gloucester and Leicester Cathedrals as well
as several parish churches across the United Kingdom.

The model of fund-raising in Tisbury, United Kingdom, will be community-orientated, allowing all donations, no matter how small, to be part of the whole effort and every donor to be part of this rare and unique opportunity to mark our moment in the history of our community.

Thursday, November 10, 5:30—6:30 PM on Zoom: Pollination Ecology: A Virtual Discussion on How Can We Help Bees.

Honeybees, both locally and nationally have been suffering catastrophic losses. During this Zoom program Larry Dapsis will review honey bee biology and the factors responsible for these losses. In addition, he will review the state of wild pollinators like bumble bees and the things residents can do to help them. Many of the fruits and vegetables we eat require pollination. The current situation with murder hornets in the US will also be discussed.
Larry Dapsis has been an entomologist since age 5. He has a B.S. in Environmental Science & Biology from Fitchburg State University and an M.S. in Entomology from the University of Massachusetts – Amherst. He also has forty years of professional pest management experience including vegetables, cranberries and household insects. He joined the Cape Cod Cooperative Extension in 2011 as a Deer Tick Project Coordinator and Entomologist and is a member of the Barnstable County Task Force on Lyme and other tick-borne diseases.
