September Is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month — a time to raise awareness of this stigmatized, and often taboo, topic. Suicidal thoughts, much like mental health conditions, can affect anyone regardless of age, gender or background. In fact, suicide is often the result of an untreated mental health condition.

The Bridge Center participated in two community events this month to help raise awareness about the importance of mental health and suicide prevention. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Louisiana hosted its annual mental health fair, Get Connected! at The Goodwood Main Library in observance of Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. And we participated in the Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs’ Suicide Prevention Summit focused on suicide prevention and mental health advocacy for veterans.

This month, help us shift public perception, spread hope and share vital information with people affected by suicide. We’ll be sharing resources and information on our social media channels all month. Share with those in your circles to help people in crisis know they are not alone and that help is available.

Are You Suffering From Fall Anxiety?

Fall has a feeling and there’s a name for it — autumn anxiety. The seasonal condition is a real thing, and it shows up in increased worry, fear and other negative emotions when the seasons change. This increase in anxiety can come from the new school year, the looming stress of the holiday season, or even regret over not having achieved goals over the summer.

Experts identify the following as possible symptoms of autumn anxiety:

  • low mood and depression
  • anxiety and excessive worry
  • irritability
  • lethargy, sleepiness, and fatigue
  • loss of interest in everyday activities
Spending time outdoors and getting more sun, exercising, finding a new hobby or interest, and getting professional help if your anxiety does not improve are all ways to help you find relief from the stress of the season change.

Dial 988 If You or a Loved One Is in Crisis

The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is a national network of local crisis centers that provides free and confidential emotional support to people in suicidal crisis or emotional distress 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in the United States. If you or a loved one is experiencing a mental health crisis, you can dial 988 and be connected immediately to trained counselors who will listen, provide support, and connect you to resources if necessary.

The Bridge Center and RI, our service provider, are committed to East Baton Rouge Parish residents and continue to offer no wrong door access and the same level of services within the facility, including detoxification services.

We have consolidated two units to right-size the overall program based on the availability of funding and sustainability.  This will allow continued mental health and substance use services and align with the Louisiana Department of Health’s newly implemented crisis continuum.

The Bridge Center for Hope is open 24/7. Help is available any time day or night. Anyone aged 18 and up can seek care at our facility. You do not need a referral.

Hope. Help. Healing.
