Banned Books Week kicks off on Sunday. If you haven’t been following along, you might think this celebratory week is new because of all the recent news about banned books across the state. However, the week was first celebrated in 1982 as challenges against certain books in schools and libraries began to increase.

Many banned books are written by authors of color, or feature LGBTQIA characters or characters of color. Check out some of the top books that were challenged last year, ranging from classics like Toni Morrison’s “Bluest Eye,” to newer books like “All Boys Aren’t Blue” by George M. Johnson. So, how is Houston honoring the holiday?

Banned Book Activities

Houston Poet Laureate Outspoken Bean will perform a special spoken word about banned books at four different Harris County public library locations starting Saturday at the Barbara Bush library.

What I’m Reading

Growing up, I know many of us read “A Wrinkle in Time” by Madeleine L’engle, but I recently found myself diving into her work for adults. I’m attending a writers retreat later this month near her former farm house Crosswicks named after her book, A Circle of Quiet.” It's an introspective, soulful book that makes you think. My favorite kind of book!  What are you all reading this month? Share with me and I may feature in next week's Books with Brooke.

Today On City Cast Houston

It’s that time again where we dive into a week's worth of news. Today, producer Carlignon Jones is joined by contributors Shiyam Galyon and Abdulla Kais ALMoumen. They’ll chat about how well the Astros are doing, Sen. Ted Cruz’s reaction to gun control, gun buy backs, and so much more.
What did you miss this week?
I got really excited about using the pumpkin emoji for the first time this month. It's the little things, y'all. 🎃
