PAST AND PRESENT HLOMISA FELLOWS OF THE DUT HLOMISA SKILLS ACADEMY ARE URGED TO FOSTER CHANGE IN SOCIETY
The Durban University of Technology (DUT) Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Thandwa Mthembu, hosted the Hlomisa Skills Academy Gala Dinner at the Capital Pearls in uMhlanga, on Thursday, 8 September 2022. The program is part of the Grow-Your-Own-Timber (GOOT) suit of programs that the Executive Management Committee (EMC) has approved over the years with the aim of ensuring that DUT has the right people who play and will play their roles right. In this context, the Hlomisa Skills Academy contributes direct to the Sustainability Strategic Objective of ENVISION2030 when it comes to investment in people as the source of everything that DUT does.

The Durban University of Technology (DUT) continues to be at the forefront of research capacity development, which is in line with its Strategic Plan’s Strategic Focus Area 2: Building research and innovation for development.
Two DUT doctoral students, Nhlanganiso Madondo and Nonsikelelo Precious Mthethwa were the proud recipients in the category of Research Excellence Award for Next Generation Researchers. The announcement was made at the 2022 National Research Foundation (NRF) Awards gala event held recently in in Cape Town. The award ceremony was held in celebration of the ‘International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development’.
DUT IS ALL SET TO OBTAIN A NEW ENTERPRISE RESOURCE PLANNING (ERP) PLATFORM
One of the perspectives of the Durban University of Technology’s (DUTs) ENVISION2030 is having green ecosystems to improve the efficiency of resource utilisation and decrease environmental risk. In aiming to adhere to making DUT green, the institution has embarked on the journey to obtain a new Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) platform to support primary Back Office functions such as Finance, Procurement, Human Capital Services, and Students Information System. More functions are planned for 2023 and beyond.
In terms of the key role player in this project, Dr Progress Mtshali, the DUT Chief Information Officer, was appointed as the overall Project Sponsor. He is supported by an esteemed team who are the Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor: Research, Innovation & Engagement, Prof Keolebogile Motaung, Acting Human Capital Services Director, Mr Mxolisi Msomi, Chief Financial Officer, Ms Nthanyiseni Dhumazi, DUT Registrar, Dr Maditsane Nkonoane and Director of Procurement, Ms Nonhlanhla Ruth Gumbi.
DUT REGISTRAR APPLAUDED FOR HIS CONTRIBUTIONS ON STUDENT MATTERS BY STUDENTS AND STAFF DURING VUNA LEADERSHIP LECTURE
Dr Maditsane Nkonoane, Registrar at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) was largely applauded for his immense support of not only the Vuna Leadership Academy (VunaLA) but also for his investments towards and dedication to student governance matters.
The charismatic Dr Nkonoane addressed students from both Midlands and Durban during a Vuna Leadership Academy Lecture on Friday, 9 September 2022 at the Riverside Campus. An overwhelming turnout saw students from the Durban campuses travel to Pietermaritzburg to be part of the session that was going to be addressed by Dr Nkonoane.
As of 18 July 2022, the Durban University of Technology (DUT) staff and students have physically returned to campus after the relaxation of the public health mandates and the COVID-19 restrictions. To get insight on getting back to the “new” normal, DUT’s Communications team Zanele Mashaba spoke to Zanele Nduli, a Student Administration Clerk.
Q: Kindly tell me about your role and the duration you have been at DUT?
A: “I am a Student Administration Clerk. My role at DUT is to support Academic Departments with academic administration ranging from applications to registration. I started at DUT in August 2021 and I have been employed for a very fruitful one year.”
