Announcing the 2023 OVCR Creativity Hubs RFP
with Special Feature for 2023 Competition

The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research is excited to announce that the 2023 Creativity Hubs funding competition has begun!

The Request for Proposals for the 2023 program cycle is now available on the Creativity Hubs website, and Expressions of Interest are due October 28, 2022. Full proposals will be solicited by invitation-only and will be due in April 2023. The winning team(s) will be awarded up to $500,000 to execute their project over two years.

About the Creativity Hubs Program

Creativity Hubs is the signature strategic initiative of the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research (OVCR). Over the past five years, Creativity Hubs competitions have funded eight exciting projects.

The OVCR’s Creativity Hubs program brings together teams of investigators across campus from diverse disciplines to propose solutions to address major societal challenges. Projects supported by the program innovate solutions, bring together exciting new ideas, and lead to sustainable, large-scale opportunities. The OVCR supports and facilitates the hub-based research development model to grow and nurture comprehensive research activity at Carolina. The program this year will continue to solicit proposals from any interdisciplinary teams proposing transformational projects from diverse disciplines, with the goal of funding up to two new Creativity Hubs for the campus in 2023.

NEW! For the 2023 competition, one of the hub awards will be made in a special data science category that is being jointly funded by the OVCR and UNC’s new School of Data Science and Society (SDSS). Teams that decide to target the special data science category must propose projects that have an interdisciplinary emphasis as well as grounding in theory and methods applied to the entire data life cycle. The OVCR/SDSS Creativity Hub opportunity aims to demonstrate and enhance the utility of existing or newly developed data collections to create hypotheses and catalyze interdisciplinary discoveries across disciplines.

Responding to the Request for Proposals

In the Expression of Interest (due October 28), teams are asked to articulate:

  • the problem or challenge,
  • how the proposed research will provide solutions to the challenge,
  • how the diverse expertise of the team forms a greater whole, and
  • how the proposed research program would make the team highly competitive in pursuing future extramural funding or commercialization opportunities.

If designated for the OVCR/SDSS Creativity Hub opportunity, teams are asked to note this in the expression of interest and clearly state how the application incorporates data science. Additionally, they are asked to specifically address:

  • the source of the data;
  • the methods and algorithm(s) used to analyze data, and any challenges that might be addressed by this attempt to use the proposed algorithms;
  • the hoped-for impact of this work--incorporate use case(s) and describe how the work would facilitate new discoveries or be practically applied and used in disciplines beyond simply the field of data science; and
  • how trainees will be included in the project.

Please circulate this notice broadly within your units.

The Office of Research Development will host two events to help teams organize and prepare expressions of interests:

We look forward to partnering with interested teams to keep Carolina at the forefront of creativity and innovation.
