Game Day Preview: Huskies vs Rams

It's the marquee matchup of Week 3 in the Canada West as the Huskies head south on Highway 11 to take on their provincial rivals, the Regina Rams, in an early battle for top spot in the conference. For a second straight week the number two ranked Dogs are facing a fellow top ten squad with Regina sitting sixth in the national rankings.

The Huskies and Rams are the only remaining unbeaten teams in the Can West. It's the first time ever that they are squaring off with identical 2-0 records. The Saturday night showdown will cap off Football Weekend in Saskatchewan, which also features a CFL tilt between the Riders and Elks and a junior contest between the Saskatoon Hilltops and Regina Thunder at Mosaic Stadium.

Kick off is scheduled for 7 p.m. on September 17. Watch the game on SaskTel channels 49/349 or CanadaWest.tv or listen on the HuskieFAN app.

Memory Bank: Mason Nyhus

Welcome to a new feature that will appear regularly throughout the season. We asked an assortment of veteran Huskie players and a few coaches to share some of their football memories. Who better to start things off than the man at the controls of the offence, fifth-year quarterback Mason Nyhus.

Who was the first player you remember watching at any level?

The first official "dude" that I remember cheering for was probably Kerry Joseph. That's an OG Rider right there. That 2007 Grey Cup run I remember pretty distinctly as a kid and that was pretty cool. He was just a dude. I remember he was with the Ottawa Renegades -- that dates me, especially on this team -- but (Joseph) came over and he won the starting job. Had an absolute cannon so he was fun to watch.

What's your earliest memory of a game you attended?

I'm sure I went to a tonne. The first game that I thoroughly remember was a Rider game with my dad and it was Week 1, they were playing Montreal. (Coach) Flory was playing, funny enough, but it went to overtime. SJ Green made an unreal one-handed catch in the back of the end zone. DJ Flick -- that's an old name -- made some sweet catches. I think it hailed at some point in that game too.

Did you ever attend any Huskie games prior to joining the program?

No, not even on recruiting visits. My first game in Griffiths Stadium was my first year redshirting and it was a beauty. It was a packed house, we were playing U of R in Week 1 and it went to OT and we won on the leg of Sean Stenger. There's an OG name for the alumni. But yeah, that was a fun one.

When you first joined the Huskies, who showed you the ropes?

Mostly bomb squad guys. (Drew) Burko, (Kyle) Siemens, (Mitch) Hillis, (Yol) Piok. Chad Braun was in my recruiting class but he was still an older dude. Julan Lynch for sure -- a fellow Regina Riffel kid. He graduated with my older brother actually so I kind of had a previous relationship with Julan. Those were the main core. Siemens was probably my biggest role model. Still one of my best friends to this day. He was a guy that just carried himself with a lot of poise, not just on the football field but in the community and with academics as well. I think he was the gold standard of what it means to be a student-athlete on and off the field.

Huskie Fan Bus to Regina

Some Huskie parents are organizing a fan bus to Regina for this weekend's game and they're extending an invitation to any alumni who may wish to hop on board!

With a full bus the cost will be about $25 per person, not including a ticket to the game. The bus will be scheduled to arrive at Mosaic Stadium approximately one hour prior to the 7pm kickoff. We're looking to have a full busload of about 40 fans. The hope is to get things finalized as soon as possible so if you are interested, send an email to Huskiesfootballfanbus@gmail.com.
Fourth-year receiver Caleb Morin has been named the Huskies Male Athlete of the Week for his efforts in the Dogs' 29-10 win over UBC. The Evan Hardy Collegiate product hauled in six catches for a career-high 97 yards in the victory.
Update on USask response to tragedy at James Smith Cree Nation & Weldon

The tragic events at James Smith Cree Nation and Weldon earlier this month continue to impact our university community.

In consultation with Indigenous leaders at the University of Saskatchewan, an emergency trust has been established to support students who have been directly impacted by the tragic acts of violence.

This fund will support students facing unexpected financial hardship due to memorial and funeral expenses, travel and accommodation costs, loss of income, and other related expenses. It will also be used for additional mental health support for Indigenous students, such as counselling and other emotional assistance programming through Elders and wellness staff at USask.

We invite our USask family to join us in supporting those affected by making a donation to the USask Indigenous Student Emergency Response Trust.

Be a part of the Starting 24!

Starting 24 is simple. By giving a little bit, either monthly or yearly, together we can make a huge difference to give the Huskies the ability to compete each year for the Vanier Cup!

Reoccurring pledges are the best way for you to help us support the team!

  • The Starting 24 is the primary fundraiser for the Huskie football team. There are 24 starting positions on a football team and they each need to execute their job and work together for the team to be successful. The Starting 24 is the same, it requires that we all chip in a little bit to build a successful program.
  • Funds are used to solely benefit the team, either through scholarships or toward operations.
  • All donations are eligible for a tax receipt from the University of Saskatchewan.
  • Starting in September, anyone who signs up for the Starting 24 All-Canadian Level - a $24 per month donation - will also receive a complimentary Huskie football Yeti mug.
  • All-Canadian Level members who are football alumni will also receive their name on the name plate above your former number in the Huskies locker room.

The Huskies are seeking their first 3-0 start since 2007.
That season, they notched wins over Alberta, Calgary and Simon Fraser before suffering a Week 4 loss at Manitoba.
The team would go on to finish 5-3 in conference play before falling to Regina in the Hardy Cup semifinals.
