Dear friends,

This Sunday, the story of the Good Samaritan will be retold. Many of us vividly remember this story from our children’s Bibles. And for many of us, this story has illumined our conscience, and it has helped us to make the choice, when opportunity arose, to assist someone in distress.

But I wonder what it would have been like to have this story told afresh, as a Judean in the first century CE? First, there’s the detail of a man on a notoriously dangerous road having been robbed and brutalized, left “half dead.” Then Jesus casts two respected religious authorities (who should have a social obligation to help this man) as characters who cross to the other side of the road, rather than assisting this man. But wait, then Jesus really pushes the plot, and it is a foreigner (without any form of obligation to help)—a Samaritan, in fact—who rescues this brutalized man out of pity, and then lavishly hands the innkeeper the equivalent sum worth two months of care and lodging. Then, Jesus then bids us to do the same <<mic drop>>.

I’m curious… who might the equivalent of this “Samaritan” be in our own communities? How might we follow Jesus’ example and cross boundaries that separate us from one another? And, what was it like to receive such grace, at some time in our lives, from a total stranger?

So let’s bring those questions and stories with us as we come together for worship, education, and fellowship this Sunday.

Blessed be the journey!

"Pick-up Choir" This Sunday

If you've ever wondered what it would be like to sing in the choir, or if you're a more experienced singer wanting to share your gift of music in harmony... now's your chance! Everyone is welcome. We'll gather at 8:10am Sunday morning to rehearse a piece that we'll then sing at the 9:00am service. Email for more details, or if you'd like to be on the email to receive the music ahead of time.

Donation Support for Migrants from Texas

LMC will be collecting supplies for migrants who have been bused to Chicago from Texas in recent weeks. The city has asked for only new items, such as specific toiletries, warm clothing, toys, and duffel bags. LMC will collect items for the next couple of weeks. Please see the list of needs here. Please reach out to Pastor Lindsay if you would like to purchase a donation online and have it sent directly to church or one of the volunteers.

2023 LMC Council Positions

Are you interested in serving on the LMC Council? Do you know someone who you believe would make a great Council member? The LMC Council is forming the annual nominating team and considering candidates for new Council positions to be elected this fall. Speak with Melissa Busch if you are interested in serving on Council or on the nominating team. The nominating team will begin its work in the next 2 weeks, so if you are interested in serving, please let Melissa know ASAP.

Many Thanks to Those Serving in Christopher's Lay Committee!

In the Lutheran Church (ELCA), lay committees play an integral part in the formation of future rostered leaders. They meet regularly to provide guidance and feedback to an intern, as well as to provide written reports that inform the Church as to the intern's progress during their internship. For Christopher's lay committee here at LMC, 4 faithful parishioners have agreed to serve the Church with their time and talents:
  • Alison Blaser
  • Toietta Dixon
  • Diane Betten, and
  • Jim Hilliard
