GEM completes the TREQ project delivering results that can substantially contribute to the understanding of earthquake risk
To all our partners and collaborators,
thank you for making the project a big success!
After 20 months of project activities, the USAID-supported GEM TREQ project (Training and Communication for Earthquake Risk Assessment) came to a successful conclusion in June 2022. The project worked closely with local partners and scientists to develop the capacity for urban earthquake hazard and risk assessment in Latin America, for the cities of Quito (Ecuador), Cali (Colombia), and Santiago de los Caballeros (Dominican Republic); and to produce training, educational and communication materials for better understanding of earthquake risk.

Overview
The TREQ project produced a wide range of outputs: hazard and risk models, urban risk assessments, building-level inventory, city scenarios and many more. Models were complemented by 15 technical reports, 15 videos on technical training using the OpenQuake-engine (in English and Spanish), seven videos with material to disseminate the models and results of urban risk assessment in the TREQ cities, and two videos for communicating earthquake risk to the general public. Accomplishments
Urban risk assessment in Latin America and the Caribbean
Explore seismic hazard and risk assessment at the urban scale for the three TREQ cities and download the input models and results; get the updated city risk assessment reports, probabilistic seismic hazard models accounting for site-specific response, exposure databases of population and buildings, vulnerability and fragility functions, city risk maps, city scenarios and more.  read more
Improving global capacity for seismic hazard and risk
Get started with GEM's OpenQuake, and visit the project's OpenQuake online training website where you can download the OpenQuake and PSHA manuals, and watch video tutorials on seismic hazard and risk analysis.  read more
Communicating and raising earthquake risk awareness
Create your own introductory course on seismic risk by downloading TREQ's guidelines for teachers, and find out the concept behind TREQ's Training the Trainers initiative and early results and experiences of the professors from Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala and Mexico. Explore the  educational materials to raise seismic risk awareness. Complement your awareness campaigns with a video on earthquake risk developed for the general public. Revisit events, news items and newsletters about the project. read more
