We have a new edition of Tides of Pride; our e-newsletter is distributed weekly to the East Central community. These are highlights and news for the week from our classrooms and campuses.

Have a group of students that did well at a competition? A teacher that went above and beyond? Awards won? Grants received? Any amazing statistics for the week? We want to hear about it! At the Board of Trustees meeting on September 15, 2022, the Board approved an update to the 2022-2023 school year calendar. Election Day (Tuesday, November 8th) replaces the Battle of Flowers as a holiday.

The decision was made due to voter turnout and increased concerns over student & staff safety. Three campuses will be Election Day sites: East Central High School, Harmony Elementary and Pecan Valley Elementary.

Harmony Elementary celebrates grandparents

Harmony Elementary librarian, Mrs. Havard, did a great job celebrating students' grandparents. The kids read and spent quality time with all who could attend. Seeing so many having fun reading books and spending quality time with their loved ones was an incredible sight! It was a library filled with love and laughter!

Roger Lawson, Oak Crest Elementary teacher and Region 20 Elementary Teacher of the Year,  was recognized at a San Antonio Missions baseball game!

Roger Lawson, Oak Crest Elementary teacher and Region 20 Elementary Teacher of the Year,  was recognized at a San Antonio Missions baseball game! He really enjoyed the Granny Ballapeno that almost threw "the chancla" at him. Good thing he has quick reflexes!

The interview was part of a Texas Freedom Week assignment. Mr. Banks shared his reasons for serving in the military and some exciting stories. Mr. Banks is a member of the custodial team on campus.

On September 8, Highland Forest Elementary hosted its Fall 2022 Open House.
On September 8, Highland Forest Elementary hosted its Fall 2022 Open House. Mrs. Josie Martinez, the school library media specialist, received a generous donation of gently-used books from the Friends of McCreless Library. Over ten boxes of books were distributed at the Open House event. Mrs. Martinez serves on the San Antonio Public Library Board of Trustees as the District 3 representative.

International Dot Day is a day about celebrating connecting, collaborating, and creating. Way to go, Patriots!

Salado Elementary's Maria Bravo writes, "On September 11 was my big event to finally demonstrate what I have been learning at Image Dance Company & Academy. It was the first time ever to dance any kind of dance, but I was dancing Flamenco, embracing the culture and performing at Carver Community Culture Center. Not only was my family there to support me, but our principal, Mrs. Triana, and our school's academic facilitator, Mrs. Segura, surprised me with a beautiful bouquet of flowers. I am very honored to work in a school community that cares and is involved with our community and culture."

With great pride, the East Central High School Debate Team announces that Faith Neto, in her very FIRST debate tournament, absolutely decimated the competition at the extremely tough, hugely attended, and highly regarded La Vernia Bear Brawl Speech & Debate Tournament. Stinging her way through a field of 30 other competitors, Faith came to WIN, and WIN she did, taking first place in the Novice division of the Lincoln-Douglas Debate. Her entire squad was on hand to cheer her to victory in East Central's best tradition, and Coach Maggie Toney could not be more delighted with the fabulous start that EC Debate is off to in this new school year! Look for more exciting news from Faith and all the amazing debaters as they ramp up their efforts to make the debate world fear the arrival of the East Central Hornet Debate squad! Vini. Dixi. Vici.

East Central High School's boys and girls basketball programs partnered with the non-profit Feed My Starving Children on September 15 to fill food packets for children worldwide. The 60+ student-athletes, countless parents and community members were able to pack 327 boxes, which equates to 70,632 meals that feed193 kids for a year! Servant leadership was truly on display as our kids promoted that blessed people should bless people.

Great things are happening at East Central's Bilingual Department with its collaboration with Region 20!
Great things are happening at East Central's Bilingual Department with its collaboration with Region 20! There was a terrific turnout for the Adult ESL classes on September 12 and 13. The ESL students also have the opportunity to take GED classes in Spanish online and, at no cost, a five-day course to become certified as a paraprofessional and substitute teacher. Dr. Martinez also gave the class a quick training to the students on the District's Raptor drills for emergencies.
 The Child Nutrition department reported many smiling faces as grandparents enjoyed a nutritious meal with their students.
