Upcoming Events

This month is our Journey to Zero Waste Fair! This will be our second JTZW event this year: just like last time, we will be giving out items- including office supplies, kitchen supplies, clothes, reusable snack bags, totes, and more- to our campus community for FREE. Join us and see what kinds of goodies you can dig up!

Sustainability Spotlight: Dominique Harrison

October has been a busy month for our Sustainability Program with various events going on. But thanks to our great supporters across campus, we are able to make a larger impact!

Dominique Harrison is one of those people who regularly helps us during events. Just recently, she volunteered during our Clean Air Day Event, engaging with students and encouraging them to take the clean air pledge. During U-Hour on our Clean Air Day Celebration, over 200 people took the pledge to commit to doing their part in cleaning the air. She also encourages others to volunteer and brought Lucero Ordonez who helped out as well. Dominique also has signed up to help us out at our Journey to Zero Waste Fair on October 27th during U-Hour. These events are all outside of her typical work load as a Survey Administrator & Analyst. In that role, she worked closely with Juliana to create the CSUSM Sustainability Survey. This survey is key in assessing the general knowledge, behaviors, and culture of our campus as it relates to sustainability to then help our team develop programming, training, and engagement opportunities.

We truly appreciate all of Dominique’s work, inside and out of the office! Thank you, Dominique!

Fall Season Produce Guide

With Fall upon us, you may be wondering what produce is currently in-season. And the answer is: lots of stuff!  There are many benefits to eating in-season produce, including:
  • It's more environmentally-friendly! Eating seasonally reduces the demand for out of season produce which further supports more local produce and supports local farming in your area which means less transportation, less refrigeration, less hot houses, and less irradiation of produce.
  • The produce is less expensive! When farmers are harvesting a large abundance of produce due to the crop being in season, the cost of the produce goes down.
  • Better tasting produce! When fruits and vegetables are picked for consumption that have been naturally ripened on the vine or the tree and harvested at the right time, it will have much more flavor and nutrition.
Besides the ones mentioned above, there is an abundance of other produce that is also in season during the Fall months. For a more in-depth list, please visit the USDA's website to view the full produce guide

For locals living on or near campus, please also check out the San Marcos Farmers Market! They're located on North City Drive (near the Quad) and are there every Tuesday from 3pm-7pm. Give them a follow on Instagram @sanmarcosfarmersmarket for the latest farmers market news and updates!

Sustainability Tips of the Month

Looking to spookify your home this month while still being sustainable? Well look no further: here are some sustainable tips where you can do just that!
  • Reuse instead of buying materials for decorations! Gather supplies, arts, and crafts throughout the year. Examples include:
    • Paint foam peanuts (packing materials) and turn them into worms
    • Clean Styrofoam and make Halloween masks
    • Turn cardboard boxes into tombstones
    • Reuse your decorations from the previous year
  • Make your own costumes! Keep old clothes that can be used as good pieces or parts of costumes, like worn t-shirts, black pants/shorts, etc. If necessary, shop at local thrift shops (like Goodwill or Valley Thrift Store), consignment stores, and yard sales instead of buying retail.
  • When having a party, cut down on waste by avoiding disposable cups, plates, and cutlery. Use regular dishes or buy biodegradable ones, and use a marker (or apply cute labels) to identify cups so party-goers can keep track of theirs.
  • Buy locally produced foods, candies, and treats! Look for goodies with minimal packaging and/or those made packaged in recycled materials.
  • Use (and decorate) household items to collect candy in when going trick-or-treating! A bucket, pillowcase, or old even an old bag can be decorated inexpensively at home - and reused year after year.

Recent Events

In collaboration with the Women and Gender Equity Center, ASI, and Student Health and Counseling Services, we hosted this event in the WGEC! We shared sustainable menstruation information and handed out free menstrual cups and period underwear to all those that dropped by.

Thank you to everyone who dropped by! For those of you that were unable to snag a free menstrual cup at this event and are interested in having one, please reach out to the WGEC, SHCS, or Sustainability and we can provide you one.

October 6th was California Clean Air Day! CSUSM celebrated with a tree planting ceremony in the morning, followed by a Clean Air Pledge event shortly thereafter.

Thank you to everyone who participated and helped support both events on this day. It was an excellent turn out this year, and we're excited to do it again next year!

To learn more about this year's events and what it meant for participating CSUSM staff, including our very own Juliana Goodlaw-Morris, check out this article.
