Dear Centennial Crew,

It was great to see so many families, new and old, at last night’s first Collaborative School Committee meeting.  During CSC we shared the results from last spring’s ELA and Math CMAS assessment, we reviewed our Beginning of Year Istation reading assessment data and talked about this year’s EL Education Work Plan goals.  We will post the CSC presentation on the school website for all to view.  We will also briefly review this week’s CSC and PTA meetings at Community Coffee Chat on Friday at 9:00am in the school cafeteria.

Don’t forget that today after school from 3:50 to 5:00 on the West/Purple playground we have Families of Color Playground Night. Come mingle and have fun together!  This event is specifically designed for families of color to have a space to build relationships and be together, and all are welcome to attend, as always. This event began in Spring of 2021, when families of color shared that they would like our school to hold space specifically for them.

Thanks as always for your support and involvement.

Sincerely,

Laura and Emily

News From the Library

This week is Banned Book Week!

"Books Unite Us, Censorship Divides Us"

Banned book week is a national event celebrating the freedom to read. If you have a 3rd-5th grade student, we will be talking about how some of their favorite books (Dogman, Captain Underpants, Shel Silverstein's Poetry) have been challenged and how some people think they should be removed from libraries.  I have put "Caution Tape" around a few of the books that have been challenged to spark conversation about why they have been challenged and how it makes us feel when we don't have access to books that we love to read.  No worries though, students are still able to check out those books!

While many books have been and continue to be banned around the country, we celebrate the fact that the majority of the books have remained available.  We celebrate the freedom to read!

Author Visit:
On 9/29 Author Wendi Arons will be at Centennial to talk to grades 3-5 about her new book, Ginger Mancino Kid Comedian.  We are very grateful to the BookBar and Bookies for sharing their love of literacy and for giving out students this opportunity to hear from a published author.

Order forms for her book will be sent out by crew leaders later this week.

Read On,
~Cindy
