Giles Orpen-Smellie, Police and Crime Commissioner for Norfolk, paid tribute to Her Late Majesty on the day of her death, 8th September: Mr Orpen-Smellie said: “Today we are a nation in mourning. “Her Majesty The Queen will be forever remembered for her life of service to the country and to the Commonwealth. “She has been a much-loved and hugely respected figure and a constant presence throughout most of our lives. “Here in Norfolk, the county has long enjoyed a particularly special relationship with the Royal Family, with The Queen having spent a great deal of time at Sandringham with her late husband His Royal Highness, The Duke of Edinburgh and their family, enjoying the beautiful countryside, especially at Christmas. “I know the death of Her Majesty will be met with sadness and keenly felt by people across the county. “Norfolk Constabulary plays a vital role in ensuring the safety of the Royal Family at Sandringham and this moment will bring enormous sadness to all officers who have taken on such duties down the years. “My deepest condolences and sympathies are with the entire Royal Family at this very sad hour. “God save the Queen. Long live the King.” |

| Service of Thanksgiving and CommemorationMore than 1,000 people from across Norfolk paid tribute to Her Late Majesty The Queen at a special service at Norwich Cathedral. The Service of Thanksgiving and Commemoration for the Life and Reign of Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second took place on Thursday 15 September. Led by Norwich Cathedral Choir, the 1,000-strong congregation paid homage to Her Majesty by filling the 900-year-old Cathedral with heartfelt singing of well-known hymns such as Love Divine, All Loves Excelling and I Vow to Thee, My Country. The Lord Mayor of Norwich and His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Norfolk were among those to give readings. |

In his introduction, Norwich Cathedral’s Acting Dean, The Revd Dr Peter Doll, said: |
“For seventy years, the simple knowledge of her presence as monarch has given a sense of security, calm and peace to this nation, to the world and in our own lives as citizens. In a life well lived, in times of great joy, and in moments of profound sorrow, the late Queen gave an example of godly life, inextinguishable faith, profound hope and real humility as she served the Commonwealth, this nation and her own family.” |
|
The Bishop of Norwich, the Rt Revd Graham Usher, said it had been “the utter privilege of my life” to serve The Queen as Bishop of Norwich in these last few years, continuing a promise he first made as a Cub Scout aged eight. Paying tribute to Her Majesty in his sermon, he said: |
“The Late Queen brought hope in her messages to those affected by disaster; reconciliation through small symbolic acts where there had been division; comfort where there were many tears; an attentive ear to those who spent time with her; an ability to adapt and evolve, yet maintain a mystery; and a keen eye for the going at the three forty at Epsom!” |
|
To conclude his sermon, the Bishop poignantly turned to the simple words famously spoken by Paddington Bear at the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Celebrations in June. He said: |
“Another who lived life as a joyous adventure was an evacuee, a refugee, a one-time prisoner, who liked marmalade sandwiches, and tried to have the very best manners at tea. He said, just three months ago and really on behalf of us all, “Thank you Ma’am, for everything.” |

A recording of Thursday’s service is available to watch in the Norwich Cathedral Services YouTube Channel. On Monday 19 September, all are welcome to gather in Norwich Cathedral’s Nave to watch a livestream of the State Funeral of Her late Majesty The Queen, which will take place at Westminster Abbey at 11am after a procession from the Palace of Westminster. The Cathedral will broadcast the BBC’s live coverage from 9am and no ticket is required. The Revd Canon Aidan Platten, the Cathedral’s Canon Precentor, said: |
“Grief can be a lonely place and that has been made worse during the pandemic. We are showing the BBC’s feed of the late Queen’s funeral so that people are able to gather together and share in this moment, rather than be on their own. The constant stream of people coming in to light candles and sign the books of condolence signifies a desire to be with other people in a space that is safe and holds us together in joy and sorrow.” |
|
Norwich Cathedral continues to be open from 7am until 8pm daily for people to pay their respects, to sign books of condolence, to lay flowers, light candles and to attend worship. Please check the Cathedral website for the latest information. Flowers (without plastic wrapping) can be laid outside the entrance to the Cathedral’s Hostry in the Upper Close and Books of Condolence are open for people to sign in the Cathedral’s Nave. |

| Chaplains Support Crowds at SandringhamChaplains from the Diocese of Norwich have been offering support and a listening ear to the crowds gathered at Sandringham Estate to lay flowers for Her Late Majesty. A chaplaincy rota to support visitors to Sandringham was set up after the news broke that The Queen had died. Revd Veronica Wilson, Vicar at Heachamwas on the chaplaincy rota the day that the new Prince and Princess of Wales visited Sandringham. Revd Veronica said: “I’ve had some brilliant conversations with people as well as an outpouring of grief from those coming to lay flowers. The death of the Queen seems to have keyed into other personal griefs. I’ve also had lots of conversations about the time people met the Queen and saw the Queen, so I’ve heard fabulous stories too.” The Sandringham Estate will be closed on Monday 19 September, the day of the Queen’s funeral. If you do wish to visit to lay flowers, then please see the guidance here: |

Sandringham & West Newton Primary AcademyEarlier this week, children from Sandringham and West Newton Church of England Primary Academy shared their memories of The Queen with ITV Anglia and BBC Radio Norfolk. The five children interviewed by Radio Norfolk had all met The Queen: |

| “I was in Year 1 and I got the opportunity to talk to The Queen and meet The Queen,” said one of the pupils. “I gave her a bouquet of pink roses and she said ‘Thank you for my flowers’. She was really happy and nice.” Another pupil, Max, said: “I met The Queen when I was in Year 4. It was really nice to shake her hand and it felt really nice to just get given the Bible and see her as well.” These touching memories are likely to be with the children for their entire lives. Sandringham WIThe photograph shows The Queen in January 2017 carrying a gift from the Sandringham Women’s Institute (WI). It was a pot of her favourite marmalade, made by one of the members. There was indeed a special bond with Paddington and his emergency supplies! A senior member of the WI branch which welcomed the Queen to meetings for almost 80 years described her as 'simply one of us'. The Queen would join members of the Sandringham WI for a catch-up over tea and cake each January, towards the end of her Christmas break in Norfolk. |

Yvonne Brown, the 35-strong branch's vice president, said: “For the two hours of a meeting she was one of the ladies. She had her table with three other ladies, she used to pour the tea and offer them cakes. It was just as informal as you can be when we've got the Queen at our meeting.” |

Royal Warrant HoldersThe first of a series featuring some of the 41 Norfolk companies granted a Royal Warrant by Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Sadly, those granted a Royal Warrant from Her Majesty will now, by tradition, have their appointment void. They will, however, receive two years’ grace in which they can retain their status. The regal approval is granted to companies which provide regular products or services to the Royal Household; let’s hope our new King will be as pleased with these Norfolk businesses as Her Late Majesty evidently was.
