When I wrote last I asked for prayer concerning my upcoming entry back into India. I hadn't been there since fall of 2019 and had been grilled by immigration at that time, and my visa application in March of this year was denied, so I wasn't too sure what to expect.  This time, similar to last time, I was questioned by multiple officers, brought into a back office for more "friendly" questioning (their words), but ultimately allowed to enter. Phew! I'm grateful for His hand to continue to allow me to visit this amazing country. Thanks for praying!
  Looking Back
  • After a missed flight because of all that friendly questioning I was on my way to meet up with translation teams from 3 languages who have been piloting a piece of computer software that helps automate adaptation from closely related languages--kind of like auto complete in Gmail. After a couple hours of observing and troubleshooting, it was clear that, for mostly unexplained reasons, this software wasn't working well.  So, I made a quick decision to train them in a different tool, and before I left for the airport the next afternoon, they were all up and running and comfortably and productively using the new tool.
  • The main part of my trip was spent together with a team of my colleagues from Seed Company visiting with two of my partners who are engaged in dozens of languages across the country. We were there to listen and learn and to share some of our perspective, and to consider together the possibilities for closer partnership together in the future. It was stimulating, encouraging, and exhausting!

One hallmark of these partners is that Bible translation has grown out of their other ministries, and they've seen the need for God's Word in the heart languages first hand. (pic below shows a presentation from children's ministry and a Bible school)
  Branchu Bible
  • The first volume of the Branchu Bible is now ready for printing. After not having any active involvement with the Branchu translation project for the last 10 years or so, it's been fun to have a small part in getting the text ready for the printers, checking all 2456 pages of the typeset copy. Typesetting will now start on two more volumes--one in the traditional script, one in both scripts, needed because audiences on two sides of the border have different histories and preferences.
  • On my trip to Nepal in March a supporting church made a follow up video to a vacation Bible school presentation I did for the church in 2021, and they made a great 2-minute video to show the kids this year. Check in out here.
Family & Stuff
  • After my return from India I turned around a few days later and went with the LB, Luke, and Josh to Whistler, BC for a few days to watch Luke run a 100K mountain trail race. We rode the gondolas up the mountains and cheered him on at the top, and marveled at the beauty and the craziness of running all day up and down mountains.  Here he is, still standing after 15 hours of running, finishing in 3rd overall.   Pic below: hiking some of the race course, with Luke's friend Sam.
  • As soon as we returned from BC we had the wonderful blessing of hosting dear friends for a few days. We met John and Brooke at a Wycliffe orientation camp in 1987, have hiked in Nepal together, visited them in their jungle hut on the border of Thailand, celebrated multiple Christmases together, and shared our joys and sorrows in countless hours of conversation.  What a gift!
  • Check out this great 2 minute video, filmed during my March trip to Nepal. It was produced by a supporting church as follow-up to their support of the Branchu translation project.
  • A friend and supporter has developed a fabulous website that makes the wealth of insights from Bible translation in over 800 languages available to the layperson. Over 12,000 stories shed light on every verse of the Bible, seeing God's Word through the lense of other languages and cultures. Check out Translation Insights and Perspectives (and don't miss the introduction video on the homepage).

Thanks for standing with us, and with the Bibleless,

Jeff (and for LB and the boys)
