Hurihia tō aroaro ki te rā tukuna tō ātārangi kia taka ki muri ki a koe
Turn your face to the sun and the shadows fall behind you
Welcome to the last pānui for the term, rounded off beautifully by the Spring festival this week in school and the week beforehand, in our Kindergarten.
As the sun warms the ground and the tiny buds on the trees open, we notice the magical changes in nature, in ourselves, and in others. It is a time to breathe out and look ahead to longer, lighter days.
Waldorf seasonal festivals mark the changes of the year in a way that resonates with the journey of other peoples across time and suggests meaning and mystery for us all.
Thanks as ever go to the teachers and our supporters who bring creativity, flair, and sheer hard work to make these celebrations possible.
And speaking of hard work, this week Upper School students in Class 10 to 12 have sat their derived grade exams and the week beforehand Class 12 made their project presentations to the Upper School students, staff, and parents.
The Class 12 projects are a genuine preparation for life and have several major components all of which demand intellectual rigour and dedication to a single theme. Learning new skills, researching a wide variety of topics, and encountering unexpected challenges helps our horizons to expand, and our levels of self-management and resilience to develop, ready for life beyond school.
Since the last pānui we have also celebrated two Lower School plays, presented to us by Class 3 and by Class 5. Students, teachers, and parent helpers did a magnificent job of bringing ancient stories to life and entertaining us with antics and moral tales.
Class plays are of course a lot of fun and excitement; the rewards of many weeks of hard work. They also nurture the intellect, imagination, and emotional life of each child and are such a special aspect of our wonderful curriculum. Thank you to those of you who supported the classes as they shared their artistic endeavours with us.
As you know our regular College of Teachers hui are an opportunity for kaiako to deepen their pedagogical knowledge and consider topical issues in relation to our school and our ever-changing world. Dr Steiner tells us, ‘we can accomplish our work only if we do not see it as simply a matter of intellect or feeling, but, in the highest sense, as a moral spiritual task.’
This year our teachers have been working together to draw up the basis for our future whole school kaupapa and strategic plan, to underpin our school direction as we look to the future. In Term 4 the Board of Trustees will be checking in with the community on this work, as part of a consultation process to refine and agree our key priorities ahead.
And so, to the end of the term which culminates with our Upper School formal tonight. Following the theme of an enchanted forest, we are all looking forward to a magical and elegant evening ahead.
I am certain you will join me in thanking all our staff and students for another term of hard work, celebration, and care. Do have a restful and rejuvenating break.
Nō reira, noho ora mai rā, nā
