The department commander David Riley's Visit to Suffolk County went well.
He enjoyed the Michael Murphy Museum and fabulous dinner we had for him at Joseph Loeffler Post 1006. The food was fantastic. Great job Post 1006. Our next county meeting will be October 7 at Patchogue Post 269. Food at 7pm. Meeting at 8pm. I hope to see all posts at The meeting

National Commander's Dinner at Antun's
This coming year, the National Commander Dinner will be held on April 14 at Antun's in Queens. This year we will honor Jim Troiola from New York. I anticipate that this year's dinner will be a sell out. I am asking all posts to start thinking about how many tables they will need for this year's dinner. We need to commit in January on how many tables our county will be purchasing. If you don't get your tickets early this year, there is a good chance you will not be able to purchase tickets at a later date. Please remember, since the National Commander is from our home state, this event will sell out fast!
Please email Chairperson Mike Pankowski at mikebets@optonline.net with the number of tickets any one individual or posts will need. Tables seat 10 people. I will contact all at a later date in regards to payment.

Minutes and Reports of County Meeting September 9, 2022

I know that many of you have questions regarding the recently passed NYS gun law and how it will affect our use of ceremonial rifles in our Parades , ceremonies and funerals. I sent an email to all the members of the NYS Senate and Assembly Veterans committee and received the below response.
I have also emailed the NYS governor asking for her help with this problem and have not yet received a response. This new law is also adversely affecting our Junior Shooting program and I urge you to write to your NYS representatives and request that we be given an exemption from this law to allow us to continue our normal activities.
Good Morning Jim--
I spoke with our council staff and they noted that it would depend--
Section 265.01-e prohibits firearms in "sensitive locations" - the list is extensive and includes public parks, religious sites or public sidewalk during a "special event" that has been issued a permit for such time or event by a governmental entity (I'd assume this would include parades). However, private cemeteries are not included so rifles could be used at a ceremony at a private cemetery - we're not sure if public cemeteries are defined as public parks (I doubt it) so they likely could be use at public cemeteries too. Keep in mind, Some cemeteries are on church property and religious sites are sensitive locations so under the letter of the new law they may be prohibited from carrying firearms on that property.
Additionally, there is an exception for active military personnel to carry firearms so they could carry them in the sensitive locations if they are a part of a parade or ceremony in a public park.
I know this isn't a perfect answer, but this is our interpretation at this time.

Veterans Peer-to-Peer Program
The purpose of the Veterans Peer-to-Peer Program is to help our veterans resolve their problems by giving them a place to go for that help. To understand how our program works is simply demonstrated and explained in the following illustration. The veteran takes a glass of water (which represents stress) in his/her hand, and while standing up, holds it out straight in front. The longer it’s held, the heavier the stress gets. A veteran peer comes along beside the veteran holding the glass, and seeing the stress, the veteran peer makes the veteran comfortable by helping him/her to sit down in a chair. This also lowers the height of the outstretched arm holding the glass, making it easier for the peer to hold the arm with the glass and reduce the stress. However, there is still stress. Then along comes a clergy who takes the glass of water (stress) away. Thus, the stress is relieved.
