This Week at Leir
September 12, 2022
The U.S.-Mexico border is back in the news as the governors of Texas, Arizona, and Florida send thousands of migrants and asylum seekers to Washington, DC, New York, Chicago, and Martha's Vineyard. Join us Thursday evening for a special screening of Waylaid in Tijuana, a 2020 documentary written and produced by our very own Professor Katrina Burgess, followed by a panel discussion with NEHD-Mellon Faculty of Color Working Group Fellow, Jorge Cuéllar. Plus, free pizza! RSVP below.

Skill is generally defined as a measure of ability and training, but Does Skill Make Us Human? shows that skill distinctions are instead used to limit freedom and narrow political rights. Natasha Iskander takes readers into Qatar’s booming construction industry in the lead-up to the 2022 World Cup. Through her unprecedented look at the experiences of migrant workers, she reveals that skill functions as a marker of social difference powerful enough to structure all aspects of social and economic life.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY
In partnership with the MA Law Reform Institute, Catholic Charities of Boston, Mabel Center for Immigrant Justice, and Justice Center of Southeast MA, the City of Boston Mayor’s Office for Immigrant Advancement (MOIA) will host three free legal clinics on Saturdays in October and November 2022. These clinics will serve families seeking asylum in expedited removal proceedings on the dedicated docket and will be organized by language spoken. The clinics will include a legal orientation and 1:1 consultation with an immigration attorney.

MOIA seeks volunteers to assist with interpretation (Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Haitian Creole), event management, and legal screening.  Learn more about the opportunity and sign up at the link below.
