Down on the (Urban) Farm
When you think of farming, you probably picture wide open spaces in the middle of nowhere brimming with corn stalks. But tucked away in a beautiful meadow on top of a natural spring, Zenger Farm is an urban farm in SE Portland helping their local community. The farm models and educates visitors about sustainable food systems, environmental stewardship, community development, and access to good food for all.
Another of Zenger Farm’s goals is to give young adults and kids access to land to learn about and connect with the natural world around them. The farm’s educational programs cover topics like organic farming, rain collection systems, foods native to the Pacific Northwest, ecology, and other natural sciences. And they also have educational programs for adults (like the Community Kitchens Program pictured above)!

Saving My Grandparents' North Portland Home
Miranda Monroe’s grandparents lived in their NE Portland home for 60 years before Miranda and her sister inherited the home in 2014. Although not fully prepared to take over the maintenance of the home, Miranda understood the importance of keeping the family legacy going and her grandparents’ home was a big part of that history.
To prevent displacement of longtime N/NE Portland homeowners, Portland Housing Bureau supports home retention through a number of programs and resources, including 0% interest loans and grants, to help low-and moderate-income homeowners, seniors, and people with disabilities make the repairs and accessibility modifications to continue living safely in their homes.
Read more of Miranda’s story and learn about PHB homeowner assistance!
PHB also has services, like Mandatory Renter Relocation Assistance, that help renters in Portland. Check out more from PHB's Rental Services Office!
