Orange Shirt Day/National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

September 30 is Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This day recognizes and commemorates the tragic history of residential schools, which 150,000+ Indigenous children were forced to attend between the 1870s and 1997.
Here are three ways you can commemorate the day:
- Continue learning. More than 300 U of T Engineering community members have engaged with the Indigenous Cultural Competency Toolkit in the past year. Continue your learning by exploring the recommended resources in Modules 2 and 3. If you have not started exploring the toolkit yet, begin your journey today.
- Attend the event on September 30 (virtually or in-person) at Hart House. Andrew Wesley, former Elder-in-Residence at First Nations House, will provide the keynote address. If attending virtually, consider using one of U of T Engineering’s two virtual backgrounds to commemorate the day.
- Wear an orange shirt on September 30. Join the national movement to honour residential school Survivors and acknowledge the inter-generational trauma caused by residential schools. If you don’t have an orange shirt yet, the U of T Bookstore, in partnership with the Office of Indigenous Initiatives, will have a limited supply of Orange Shirt Day shirts available for purchase; all proceeds will go to Indigenous community organizations.

Topic: Why Can’t We Innovate During Pandemics?
The curious failure to use available science on aerosols, and aerosol-borne transmission of disease, has been a signal failing of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. The inability to adapt mental models of disease transmission to available science has held back control efforts, and likely resulted in many unnecessary illnesses and deaths. Professor Fisman will explore the parallels between the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and historical experiences, discuss obstacles to the replacement of outdated conceptual models of disease transmission, and explore what we can learn from the ideas of John Snow and Ignaz Semelweis, whose ideas did ultimately prevail.

Paid Placement Opportunities for Indigenous Students
|

Niigaan ezhi-wiidsendiying (how we walk into the future together) matches paid placements for First Nations, Inuit and/or Métis students with Indigenous community nonprofit organizations for up to 100 hours of work from October 2022 to April 2023. Indigenous students in this program also take part in four sharing circles, including two fireside gatherings and two virtual check ins, all bundled with traditional activities or teachings.
Participation in this program will also be on your CCR!

CPSIF Applications for 2022-23 opened on Monday August 22 (12PM), and will close on Monday, October 3 (12PM).
