Supporting Recovery and Mental Health at Work
We can all take steps to improve mental health and recovery from substance abuse either for ourselves or others in the workplace. September is National Recovery Month and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) provides a detailed toolkit for guidance. SAMHSA estimates:
- 40.3 million people aged 12 or older had a substance use disorder,
- 14.2 million adults aged 18 or older had serious mental illness in the past year.
In order to help others in their recovery, we need to use inclusive language and images and steer clear of certain stigmatizing terms such as: Abusers, crackhead, junkies, drunks, boozer, or drunkard. We must also be careful to use appropriate terms to describe someone with a mental illness or a mental health problem. Another area to consider when advertising events, programs, or services, is to stay away from images that are not inclusive, display stereotypical power or status inequities, use toxic images, convey a negative message, or uses drug or alcohol paraphernalia.
Focus your messages on the positives of recovery, sharing success stories, while providing hope that recovery is possible.
Though there are few local recovery month events in Central Wisconsin, there is one on Tuesday Sept. 20. The Waupaca Recovery Coalition is hosting a celebration and resource fair Tuesday Sept. 20 at the Waupaca High School from 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.
