Hey friends! I hate mosquitoes, but I hate the smell of mosquito spray more. Scroll down and you'll see that plenty of other Houstonians can't stand them either. 🦟

What Houston's Talking About

📚 Everything's Bigger in Texas

School libraries have banned more books in Texas than in any other state, according to a new analysis by PEN America. In the last school year, school administrators in Texas banned 801 books, targeting titles that focused on race, abortion, racism, and LGTBQ representation and issues. [Texas Tribune]

🎓Bad News/Good News for HBCU Grads

The bad news: Texas Southern University and Prairie View A&M grads leave with some of the highest amounts of student loan debt in the state. The good news: Many of their students also received Pell grants – and so may be eligible for maximum relief from President Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan. [Houston Chronicle]

🏠 Discrimination Lawsuit

A Black family is suing a real estate agent and two real estate brokerages after an agent refused to sell them condo units in a building in Katy. The family, who are real estate investors, said they were prepared to pay cash, but the agent wouldn’t sell to them because, she allegedly said, “I have a gut feeling that I would not get along with you.” [Houston Chronicle]

Urban Almanac: Indiangrass

Indiangrass lights up our fall landscape. (Photo from Houston Arboretum)

Kelsey Low, a naturalist at Houston Arboretum, writes,

"Photos don’t do it justice. Indiangrass has shimmering, almost metallic golden flower heads, combined with blueish stems and leaves. It makes a stunning picture in a fall meadow."

Gripes: We hate mosquitoes

Yeah, summer is officially over. But here in Houston, it's unfortunately still a thing.

Gwen writes, “Can they please air-condition Memorial Park and other outdoor places I want to walk in? Waiting for cooler temps is killing me.”

Andy gripes that he's “a blood donor to mosquitoes whenever I step out the door.”

Jaime laments, “Backyard mosquito misting systems are killing so many pollinators.”

Kimberlee writes, “We do have a spray truck that comes through for the last few decades, and I'm soooooo not happy about it... Makes my Karen wanna come out!”

Today On City Cast Houston

With cooler temperatures on the horizon, City Cast contributor Evan Mintz can’t wait for Houston’s best season to grow veggies. Among his favorites: Giant purple kale, which looks like something escaped from the Jurassic.

Life finds a way 🍂
Congrats to Royce, a two-time champion of Where Is It! He wrote in with the winning answer at 6:03 a.m., “The picture is from Hermann Park. My favorite memory in Hermann is riding horses in the park. There used to be a stable there.”
