Words From David

As I write this piece it seems that only a few hours have elapsed since I finished watching the television coverage of the funeral of our late queen, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, from London. I found the coverage, as I imagine did many others, both very slow-paced but also very moving. One of the many questions that are being asked at the moment – as people reflect, both properly and understandably so, upon her life and death (I note for the record that I was born only a few months after she became Queen) – is about her legacy. While that is a most natural thing to do, it is also true that it will be difficult to do so properly for some time to come. The impact of any life, even one so visible as that of the late Queen, might become obvious or evident only many years later.
In life in general, and this is no less true for the church, we reap often what we have not ourselves sown and we often do not reap what we have sown. This undoubted truth must guide much of what we do in mission. What we also might learn in ourselves being disciples and also in discipling others is that what we might choose to do might not quite suit us personally, even as disciples, but may, indeed often will, suit those whom we might disciple.
I remember when I first heard some years ago of the growth of late Sunday afternoon gatherings of young families in different churches – often, but not necessarily, reflective of some of the principles of the Messy Church movement – my first reaction was that this was something that would not suit me. I had quickly to remind myself, before others did so, that it was not about me, that it was not about what suited me. When in my last pre-retirement placement at Holland Park we introduced, with the help of a solid, very enthusiast team, a Messy Church-type service every couple of months as our regular Sunday morning worship, some of our members made clear that it was something that didn’t suit them.
My response, and I spoke to myself as much at the same time, was that it was not a matter of what suited us but what might enable us to reach to a community beyond ourselves. The fact that at those Sunday mornings we had our largest numbers at worship over my time there, including young families otherwise rarely seen on Sunday mornings, spoke volumes. What then might our legacy be here in this Presbytery and in the Congregations which lie within its bounds? We do not, we cannot know that quite yet – we ourselves may indeed never know - but I hope and pray that it will be a fruitful one for the Kingdom.

Project Plenty videos as discussion starters

Project Plenty seeks to support and resource the priority directions which the whole UCA has identified for its life across Qld in the coming years. Those directions gather around four pillars – discipleship, transforming communities, fit for purpose, and life together (one church).

Videos are being produced which share what is already happening across the church, to stimulate imagination in other contexts.
Check out this growing video collection  grouped around the four themes. Could you play one in worship, or at Church Council, or in home groups, as a catalyst for thinking about new possibilities in your space?
