Community Pharmacy Lincolnshire Annual General Meeting Report

Washingborough Hall, Venue for the AGM

Last Thursday 15th September saw our Annual General Meeting take place at Washingborough Hall near Lincoln.

The event was well attended, with those who came along first enjoying a buffet meal and opportunity for networking with colleagues, followed by the formal part of the AGM, where the Chair gave an overview of the work completed last financial year ending 31st March 2022 and the focus for the year ahead, and the Treasurer presenting the annual accounts. The rationale for the reduction in committee size from 12 to 10 members was also presented.

The annual accounts were approved and a copy can be found here.
A copy of the Committee's Annual Report can be found here.

We then received an excellent, interactive presentation around treating ENT conditions and minimising antibiotic use by Dr Rehaan Ansari, A GP at Cliff House Practice in Lincoln.  This was incredibly useful, interesting and timely, both for the CPCS service and for those pharmacists who may be providing the Tier 3 Enhanced Service in the near future. We have formally thanked Dr Ansari for his presentation and have asked for him to provide the slides so that we can share them with all attendees.

As Chief Officer I wanted to thank in particular our Administrator, Hazel, who organised everything for us both in terms of booking places and liaising with the hotel to organise catering and ensure everything ran smoothly on the day (I particularly commend her choice of dessert...).

We hope that those who attended will join us next year and that those who were not able to come along will be able to do so next time - save the date, Thursday 21st September 2023!

Midlands Antibiotic Amnesty 2022

All community pharmacies should have received the email below. Contractors should note that this is not one of the nationally mandated health promotion campaigns for this year, but it is hoped as many contractors as possibly can will participate in the amnesty campaign.

Email sent by Regional Team:

Midlands Antibiotic Amnesty 2022

Firstly, we would like to express our thanks and gratitude to the community pharmacy teams who participated in the Midlands Antibiotic Amnesty, which ran from 15th-30th November 2021.  We believe this was a successful campaign which demonstrated the important role that community pharmacy plays in addressing public health issues.

More information about the 2021 Antibiotic Amnesty campaign can be found in this recent article.
We are planning to repeat the campaign this November and would like to build upon the success of last year, with your support to make it bigger and better. To this end, we would like to make you aware of the plans that we have made and ask for your support:

1.        The amnesty will run from Tuesday 1st November to Wednesday 30th November 2022 and will be advertised via social media and direct to patients and staff in healthcare settings across the local area. We are seeking expressions of interest in supporting the campaign this year, with up to 100 pharmacies in each ICS becoming early adopter sites, who will receive printed campaign resources.  You can submit your expression of interest via PharmOutcomes by 30 September 2022. The module will be found on the services tab and when you save your entry it will be submitted to the team.  You will not receive a confirmation of receipt but you will see your entry saved on your services screen so that you can be reassured it is in the system.

2.        Data collection. As with the 2021 campaign, we are requesting that participating pharmacies record the number of part or full packs of antibiotics returned to the pharmacy during the period the pharmacy is participating in the campaign.  This will provide important information on the impact of the campaign and help us to understand how the public use antibiotics.  We would also like pharmacy teams to record the number of people they converse with about the amnesty and safe medicines disposal, and signpost those that return antibiotics to a simple online questionnaire via a QR code. We will develop a PharmOutcomes template for you to capture and submit the data.

3.        Resources.  In addition to providing printed campaign resources to all early adopter sites, all participating pharmacies will receive digital resources that can be printed. All participating pharmacies will receive certificates of participation after the campaign.

4.        Research. We are planning to conduct some research, in conjunction with local Schools of Pharmacy, into the outcomes of the amnesty campaign. If you would be interested in supporting this, we would like you to indicate this via the PharmOutcomes platform expressions of interest form by 30th September. We will ensure that any research projects have a minimal impact on community pharmacy teams.

5.        Waste medicine collection.
a.        While we hope the amnesty is bigger and better than last year, our data from 2021 showed that the greatest number of returned antibiotics for any single pharmacy was 30 packs. In the event that a pharmacy received a large number of antibiotics returned, we have made arrangements with NHS England that contractors can contact them to arrange additional collections of returned medicines during the amnesty campaign, at no additional cost to contractors.

b.        This year we have made links with a chain of veterinary practices in the Midlands, who will be running a similar amnesty for companion animal owners. While the veterinary campaign will highlight to return veterinary medicines to a veterinary practice, we will provide you with a QR code that can be scanned by members of the public to find their nearest veterinary surgery for disposal of veterinary medicines.

6.        Environmental impact. This year we are linking in, via social media, with other environmental campaigns to highlight the environmental importance of disposing of antibiotics appropriately.

How can you further support the campaign?
Use the #antibioticamnesty to spread the word about your participation in the campaign on social media.
Consider inviting your local MP to your pharmacy during the amnesty campaign to discuss the risks of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), the impact of inappropriate disposal of antibiotics on the environment and the important role community pharmacy plays in promoting public health.
Please note this is not one of the nationally mandated health promotion campaigns for this year, but we do hope you will participate in the amnesty campaign.
