The need for landowner assistance with reforestation in Oregon, seems to be greater than ever. Losses due to wildfires, ice storms, heat, drought, etc. are increasing the need for reforestation. This is an addition to ongoing needs for reforestation after timber harvest.
OSU Extension is planning a series of workshops to help woodland owners plan and implement reforestation and restoration plantings. Likely topics will include: assessing your situation, selecting species and types of seedlings, acquiring seedlings, site preparation for planting, protecting seedlings from damage, and maintenance throughout the establishment phase. We will also cover sources of financial and technical assistance to help get the work done.
Details on locations, dates, and registration information will be finalized pending the level of interest across the north Willamette region (Clackamas, Marion, Columbia, Washington, & Yamhill counties).
If you are interested in the Reforestation Assistance Workshops, please fill out our Fall & Winter Events form at https://beav.es/5Zk. This form is not your official registration, details will be sent via email once they are available.
Forest owners and land managers are expressing increasing concerns about how to manage forests in a changing climate. OSU Extension has held a series of work sessions with researchers to help develop practical guidance on this. Key questions and issues addressed included:
How is climate expected to change in Oregon (how much and how fast)?
How might forests respond, what are their vulnerabilities?
How can we manage existing forests and stands in the face of climate change?
What are likely approaches for regenerating new forests after timber harvests, wildfire, or other disturbances in a changing climate?
How can we integrate increased fire risk into strategies for managing forests in a changing climate?
We are now planning a series of meetings with forest landowners and land managers to share and discuss results of our discussions with researchers. If you are interested in joining a meeting with OSU Extension foresters to learn about and discuss options for managing forests in a changing climate, please fill out the form at https://beav.es/5Zk or contact Jean at jean.bremer@oregonstate.edu.
Plans are underway for an in-person Tree School on March 25, 2023 at the Clackamas Community College. Look for more information to come soon in Woodland Notes and this e-news.
