Common Threads

News and Views from the Centre for Christian Studies

September 26, 2022

Hi <<First Name>> !
Have you noticed how fast things can move from "a long way off" to "oh my gosh, we're in the middle of it!!" The school year has started. Integration Year students were in the building last week. In the building! Our diaconal students across the country are starting field placements, working on spiral assignments, and doing their reading for learning circles next month. Alan Lai is unpacking boxes and getting ready to start as Principal next week. Alcris Limongi is packing boxes and getting ready to move to Winnipeg. It's all happening, people! And I don't know where September went. Luckily I've got this month's Common Threads to remind me. Enjoy! -- Scott

Getting Ready for a Return

We want to make sure students feel safe and welcome when they return to in-person learning.

The Kaleidoscope of Faith

CCS student creatively reflects, and refracts, on her faith and diaconal calling.

CCS Fridays are Back! 2022-2023

This fall, join us for an hour to learn something new in these one hour zoom workshops.  They are free but you have to register to get the zoom link.

Getting Rid of Us and Them in the Church—October 28

Guest: Alcris Limongi

In this session, we will briefly name the processes of exclusion, marginalization, and structural inequality that are often unexamined in the church—what we call othering—and seek actions that move towards a church of belonging where there is mutual power, access, and opportunity for all people who share the space.  (Find more information on the CCS website or register for a zoom link.)

Christmas Rapture--November 18

Guest: TBA

According to a podcast on Spotify called “The Christmas Rapture”, on Christmas Eve nearly seventy years ago, Dorothy Martin and the Seekers stood outside singing carols while waiting for a spacecraft that would shepherd them away from Earth — and the impending apocalypse.  Maybe they were inspired by the gospel reading in the lectionary for the first Sunday in Advent, where some are whisked away and others are left.  In this session of CCS Fridays, we explore what rapture has to do with Christmas.  It will be just in time for you to prepare your sermon for November 27. (Watch the CCS website for registration link.)

Lambeth Learnings—December TBA

Guest: TBA

What were the important Lambeth Learnings about relating and making decisions in a world wide communion?  In this session we will hear what a Lambeth participant learned and discuss how these insights could inform inter-church and ecumenical relations. (Watch the CCS website for registration link.)

Community Prayers

  • Prayers for the members of DUCC (Diakonia of the United Church) who will be traveling to Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia for DUCC's national gathering, Oct 3-6.
  • Prayers for the family and friends of Laura Kennedy (graduate of 1987) who died this summer.
  • Prayers for the family and friends of Alma Heller (graduate of 1956) who died this summer.

Who Inspires You?

Do you know someone who exemplifies the values and aspirations of the Centre? Visit the Companion of the Centre page on the CCS website and download a Nomination form.

Theme Learning Circles 2022-2023

What does it take to build a strong, just, and healthy community? How do we love those who are in pain? Is everything you've learned about the Bible wrong? What does it mean to "do" worship? Why isn't reconciliation easy? How can you be present for someone without trying to fix them? ... If any of these questions intrigue you, maybe it's time for some continuing studies at CCS this year. Applying for the Continuing Studies program lets you register for any of our theme learning circles on a casual basis and hang out with diaconal students and others in a supportive learning community.

Development

An air purifier is one of the priciest purchases made possible by the gifts of generous donors to the Matching Gift Campaign. It is part of a strategy to welcome students back to the Centre for Christian Studies in a safe way. The purifier is already set up and improving the air quality in the meeting room where the Integrating Year students gathered last week. Here, in pictures, is our fun welcome to this new equipment that donations made possible:
