CAKE ON CLIMATE SUNDAY

Donations for refreshments this Sunday will go to FareShare Dundee, a local charity nominated by the Eco Group. FareShare collects surplus quality food from local suppliers and retailers. The food, which would otherwise end up in landfill, is 'fit for purpose' but surplus due to packaging errors, over-production or being close to the end of its shelf life. FareShare redistributes the food - including fresh fruit, vegetables, meat and dairy products - free of charge to community organisations providing residential and day services for disadvantaged groups of people in Dundee, Perth & Kinross and Angus. Enjoy the cake, made by Eco Group members, and please give generously!
Flowers this Sunday have been donated by Elaine, Scott, Ryan and Paul in memory of their late sister and aunt Sandra Brownlee (Smith), whose 70th birthday would have been this month.

Taster Evening - Tuesday 27 September
This evening we will get to celebrate our diverse cultures through food! We'll get the chance to have a wee taste of food from 3 different cuisines around the world - Indian, Middle Eastern and Scottish (just a wee taste, not a full meal). We also want to hear stories of women from our cultures who have inspired us, throughout the ages and over the world.  Share or listen to a story of women who have impressed us, while the different aromas fill the hall. *NOTE: nuts will be included in some recipes. - creating a Cathedral Environmental Action Plan
- taking part in litter surveys along the Tay as part of the Upstream Battle Citizen Science project
- support for the Property Committee in working towards Net Zero
- putting together a 'green library' of resources and information

FIRST AIDERS

Are you an up-to-date First Aider? Would you be willing to be on the welcomers' list of First Aiders, as someone who could help in an emergency during a Sunday service? If so, please let the Provost know or email admin@saintpaulscathedral.net.
CHORAL SCHOLARSHIPS

For this choir year, the Cathedral is once again offering choral scholarships. These are a great opportunity for both children and students, so do share this information far and wide. Application forms can be found here. There are also application forms at the back of the church. Click on the flyers below for larger versions.
The 50 Club

One way you can support the choral scholarship scheme is by joining the 50 club.

It's a club of 50 people that commit to contributing £5 every month for a period of one year, and each month, one lucky member wins £50, with the rest of the money going to the choral scholarship fund. The amount of money raised can support up to 4 choral scholars for the year, and many of our existing choir members have benefited from the scheme.

If you'd like to get involved, pick up a 50 club booklet from the back desk in the cathedral. It contains all the information you need to get started.

Readings this Sunday

Readings this Sunday, 25th September, are for the 16th Sunday after Pentecost: Amos 6:1a, 4-7, Luke 16:19-31

Alas for those who are at ease in Zion,
says the prophet Amos, never one to spare the feelings of the rich:
Alas for those who lie on beds of ivory,
   and lounge on their couches...

It's in the first reading this Sunday. They lounge about on ivory beds. They eat the finest meat and drink wine by the bowlful, and they sing idle songs, and in short there is nothing to be said for them at all. They have forgotten their neighbours and they are just looking out for themselves. Down with them, says Amos.
Amos has not just made up the bit about ivory beds. Archaeologists found fragments of ivory quite recently in Jerusalem, shattered to bits, dating from the time Amos is writing about (more here). These are panels of decorated ivory that would have been inlaid on wooden furniture, as in the artist's impression above.
But what really enrages Amos is not the wealth, and not the elephants sacrificed to make furniture. It's the indifference.
They sell the righteous for silver,
and the needy for a pair of sandals -
they trample the head of the poor into the dust of the earth,
and push the afflicted out of the way.

And this is why the prophet Amos is like J. B. Priestley's play An Inspector Calls. The Inspector turns up in a wealthy household in the English Midlands to investigate the death of a young woman. The family can't understand it. They had nothing to do with the death. But then connections begin to emerge. They didn't kill her: but over and over they pushed her out of the way, and all those incidents linked up, and led to her death. We are connected.
We are marking Climate Sunday this week. It's a good reminder that we are connected. Pushing the afflicted out of the way is not going to solve any problems: the prophet Amos and the Inspector would agree.

EJT

God Most High,
maker of heaven and earth,
you created humankind in your own image
and entrusted the whole world to human care:
give us grace to serve you faithfully,
that we might be trustworthy stewards of your creation,
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
