Please read on for information about the theme of the day and Volunteering NZ's online presentation on the state of volunteering.

International Volunteers Managers Day (IMV Day 2022)

International Volunteer Managers Day is celebrated on 5 NovemberThis year’s theme is “Many Backgrounds – One Profession – Stronger Together”.

For ideas on how to celebrate see this link to the IMV Day website.
Theme for 2022:  Solidarity through volunteering

The theme for this year's United Nations International Volunteer Day is solidarity through volunteering. The focus is on our shared future with our planet and acting together on climate change. The day champions the impact volunteers have in communities, nationally and globally.

A great example of this in Nelson Tasman is the Nelson Tasman Repair Cafe (see above image), where volunteers repair (and teach repair skills) to reduce items going into landfill. (photo: Jason Oldfield).

Half of us volunteer, doing more hours

Statistics New Zealand has released a 2021 update from the General Social Survey (GSS) about volunteering. It shows that 50.7% of people over the age of 15 have volunteered, either through an organisation or directly for another person in the previous month. This is a 0.9% increase on the most recent previous collection of this data (2016) when the figure was 49.8%.

However, those who volunteered for an organisation contributed an average of 15.9 hours over a four-week period, an increase of 2.4 hours from 2016. Among those who volunteered, environmental volunteerism grew in popularity. The proportion of those who volunteered increased from 6.9 percent in 2016 to 11.1 percent in 2021.
