Welcome back Sam Olsen!

A message from our CEO - Sam Olsen

Firstly, huge thank you to our Interim CEO (now COO) Dal Channa for stepping up and doing an amazing job whilst I was away. I returned from the Department for Education just three weeks ago and wow, there is a lot going on!

Looking at the data, for youth unemployment rose 119% from 407,190 to 893,735 - a staggering figure which may still rise as young people make decisions about seeking further education post-September and the furlough scheme comes to an end post-October.

If ever there was a moment and a need for Movement to Work this is it.

It is now, maybe more than ever, that our community of employers, youth-outreach organisations, training providers and government allies are needed to show up for our young people and ensure their futures are taken care of, so our whole society can thrive once again. We have been working closely at the heart of government on influencing the recovery packages and the ‘plans for jobs’ for young people - particularly the new Kickstart scheme, traineeships, and how they fit together with apprenticeships.  The Kickstart scheme, in particular, has the potential to be a real game-changer for young people trapped in the cycle of 'no experience, no job'. It could also prove to be a good incentive for struggling businesses, needing some fresh young talent at subsidised costs. In working directly with DWP and Treasury we are trying to ensure that the scheme is both (1) flexible enough for businesses to adopt quickly and (2) worthwhile for our young people, providing them with access to truly valuable experiences and proper support to ensure positive outcomes for all involved.

We need your support!

I know that this is a difficult time for so many of your organisations. However, here I am asking you to think big and work with us on tacking this youth unemployment crisis head-on. Many of your teams will already be engaged with Kickstart, but we need you to challenge them to really consider how this could play out - what could you offer? What's standing in the way?
Please share what you're thinking so we can pass these thoughts on to the right people. Please get in touch with any member of the team.

We're here for you

The good news is, we're in this together. Movement to Work is a vibrant network and has a committed team ready to listen, learn and share as we get through this massive shift in business-as-usual.

Please take a look at our updates below,  get involved and let us know how we can help!

Movement to Work launches ‘Pathways’

Pathways is a new page signposted under our ‘Young People’ section of the website to assist employers and young people during their placement, and now features in the latest version of our Welcome Pack. This was born out of the idea that when a young person comes to the end of a placement and is not offered a job or a clear next step, we are there to signpost various options for them to consider.  We list places for more jobs, more training, and more support. To get your copy of the latest MtW 'Welcome Pack' please head to the MtW members area or contact your MtW account lead.

Influencing the new Kickstart Scheme

We have been working closely with our contacts at DWP to influence this latest Kickstart scheme soon to be launched by the government. We have so far hosted two focus groups, which has been a unique opportunity for our members to directly influence the way in which this latest piece of important policy will unfold for business and for our young people. Thank you for all of your contributions so far. If you have any further thoughts or questions about Kickstart, please do get in touch with a member of the team. We want to hear from you!

The NTCA need your help

Are you aged 16-25 and based North of the Tyne or do you work with young people who are? The North of Tyne Combined Authority is seeking the views of young people in relation to impact COVID-19 has had on their experiences and aspirations of employment, education and training. They have published a short survey which should take no more than 5 minutes to complete. A final summary of the survey results will be made available so that it can be used more widely for local partners to shape their services.
