Artist Statement

CONCEPTUAL FOCUS: Reflective Process and Urban Environment: Paris
At the heart of my practice as a visual artist in the twenty-first century is the desire to stop time and engage in a process of reflection.  In our digitized, mediated and hurried lives we become less and less able to pause, think and look back. It is so urgent to keep moving forward. I am very interested in exploring and creating work based on reflection, perceiving, emotional attachment and identification with places; specifically Paris.

From photographing Paris a series of acrylic and oil paintings on canvas has grown out of recent visits.  Its identity is expressed through now iconic architecture, streets and landmarks.  Paris’ Eiffel Tower and cafés continue to inspire how people enjoy their life in a city.

MY PROCESS:
Directly experiencing Paris’ urban environment leads me to create work based on strolling,, searching, looking and generally enjoying diverse points of view and communities.  Some paintings are based on photos taken from the tops of towers, such as la tour Montparnasse, others from visiting cafés or studying façades which line boulevards.

My current series of paintings, Paris:  Love and Inspiration, grows out of linguistic and cultural studies and travel.  Photographs, text, maps, and journals provide important references for this work.  At times my process parallels knitting, stitch by stitch, stroke by stroke, reconstructing Paris in connections and patterns which make up an intricate, massive collection of streets, buildings, parks and quartiers or neighbourhoods. It has been said that a city can be considered a form of text which reveals the history and culture of its inhabitants.  The painting, Sublime, Ardent, Exploring, Obligation, intertwines words and Paris’ urban sprawl.  In Amour couleur de Paris, the city is interwoven with a parallel narrative, the poem, Amour, couleur de Paris, by Jules Romains.  Other pieces are close examinations of the clusters of buildings and identifiable landmarks for which Paris is known throughout the world.  Painters who have influenced my art are, Eleanor Bond, John Hartman, Wayne, Richard Diebenkorn and of course the palette of Emily Carr.

WANDER: Toward a Lightness of Being (2019)

WANDER-card-WEB 2.jpg
is a public art project by LAIWAN, created in collaboration with UBC’s Department of Earth, Ocean and At
, 649 22nd St, New Westminster, BC.22nd Street Skytrain Station Bus Exchange. The art project is located at the City of New Westminster, Metro Vancouver's transportation network, and the TransLink and commissioned by mospheric Sciences (EOAS)

WANDER encourages playful discovery of and advocacy for the lives of phytoplankton, making visible the water critters inhabiting the Fraser River, collected for this project from nearby the 22nd Street Bus Exchange site. The artwork aims to encourage curiosity among commuters and the general public about the natural and built environment surrounding this site.
The project simulates a ‘hidden object activity’ where commuters and audiences have opportunity to locate the twenty-two icons and a number of haikus on site. Some designs may not be immediately obvious, but all can be found in a variety of forms, surfaces or possibilities

Summer 2020 Digital Events & Exhibitions at the MAC

A LOOK AT THE SUMMER’S DIGITAL EVENTS SERIES AT THE MUSÉE D’ART CONTEMPORAIN DE MONTRÉAL (MAC)

A special screening of the only full recording of the North American premiere of Der Klang der Offenbarung des Göttlichen / The Explosive Sonics of Divinity, (2014) on the MAC’s digital platforms served as the opening salvo in a series of free digital events designed to captivate contemporary art lovers this summer.

In 2016, the MAC put on the first major exhibition dedicated to artist Ragnar Kjartansson in Canada and used the opportunity to schedule a one night only performance of the musical-theater piece, an “opera without divas”, Der Klang der Offenbarung des Göttlichen / The Explosive Sonics of Divinity, (2014). It was the North American premiere.

If you missed seeing the recording, you can still tune in to a not to be missed candid video chat between this exceptional artist and MAC Director John Zeppetelli broadcast via Facebook Live on May 27, covering subjects like the artist’s career path, his process, emblematic works and upcoming projects.

WORLD PREMIERE OF A NEW CHOREOGRAPHY BY MARIE CHOUINARD
Available from July 21 – August 21 on macm.org.
The MAC is very pleased to have presented the world premiere of Jardin des sculptures éphémères – Acte 1, a new performance by dancer and choreographer Marie Chouinard on its digital platforms. The piece premiered live on the MAC Facebook page, Tuesday, June 30, at 6 p.m. and garnered close to 75,000 views!
If you missed this amazing event live, you can still enjoy a recording of Jardin des sculptures éphémères – Acte 1 on macm.org.

UNTIL, UNTIL, UNTIL …, A FILM BY EDGAR ARCENEAUX
Available July 14 – August 31 on macm.org
Until, Until, Until … is now available for viewing on the MAC’s website. On August 13, the artist will participate in a conversation, broadcast on Facebook Live so save the date! Look for the event and join us on the MAC’s Facebook page on August 13.
This “must-see” film unpacks a particularly complex episode in recent American history, starting at Ronald Reagan’s inaugural gala in 1981. With the global recognition of historic police brutality, systemic racism and cultural appropriation being hotly debated today, Arceneaux’s probing work invites us to consider the role of art and artists in challenging preconceived ideas and revealing contradictions and ambiguities in histories that are often disregarded or overlooked.

SUPERPOSITION, BY RYOJI IKEDA
Look for it on macm.org from August 19 – September 3
October 11, 2014, the Musée d’art contemporain presented the North American premiere of superposition, a performance by Japanese electronic-music composer and visual artist Ryoji Ikeda at Théâtre Maisonneuve, Place des Arts in collaboration with the Festival du nouveau cinéma.
Offering a unique sensory experience, superposition earned wide international acclaim as “a total experience, both physical and mental”, as written by Marie Lechner in Libération at the time.
It is inspired by the mathematical notions of quantum mechanics and about the way we understand the reality of nature on an atomic scale. Performers also appear in Ikeda’s work for the first time, performing as operator/conductor/observer/examiner. All the components on stage are in a state of superposition; sound, visuals, physical phenomena, mathematical concepts, human behaviour and randomness – these will be constantly orchestrated and de-orchestrated simultaneously in a single performance piece.

CURRENTLY ON EXHIBIT AT THE MAC, SPOTLIGHT ON THE MUSEUM’S COLLECTION

POINTS OF LIGHT, extended until October 11, 2020
The exhibit brings together six works spanning forty years of moving image art, attesting to the range and the selection explores the interplay between the evolving properties of the medium and the conceptual, social or psychological content of the works – between tiny pixels of light and vast zones of aesthetic and intellectual illumination.

THE COLUMN, Adrian Paci
July 18 – September 6, 2020
The Column is the marvellous, luminous, tightly told tale of an ambitious artistic project that blends the real and the fictional, the timeless and the transhistorical, East and West. Learning that it was possible to have a marble sculpture made on board a “factory boat” as it sailed from China to Europe, Paci set out to capture the fascinating images of a sea voyage on which five Chinese craftsmen diligently carve a block of marble, transforming the raw material into a classic Roman column.

PAINTING NATURE WITH A MIRROR, extended until October 11, 2020
This selective portrait of 1980s painting in Canada showcases twenty or so paintings and drawings from the collection of the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, some on display here for the first time since they were acquired.

Announcing the Visual Arts Scholarship for Emerging Artists!

gay Mitchell and Mark Johnston, two long-standing members of our community, came to us with the offer of a seed donation of $5000 and a vision: “Both Mark and I grew up in amazing families that actively participated in the Arts, as artists and audience. Our parents who mentored us, practiced sharing their time and resources, and now, it’s our turn to contribute to our community. By choosing adolescents as recipients for this fund, we acknowledge the incredible potential of young people as they are developing as creative beings. We hope this new step will provide educational courses, outside regular school where the visual arts are not considered a priority or essential. We believe engagement with the arts is vital for teens to focus, explore and grow as people. The Arts in our community are something all of us can be part of, throughout our lives.”

A goal of $15,000 was set for the campaign. Once all the funds are raised, they will be managed as an endowment by the Port Moody Foundation, with the dividends to be used for at least two scholarships a year for low income youth to attend visual arts classes at PoMoArts.

Aultrust Financial immediately responded to our call for support with a matching donation of $5000, stating, “One of our core values at Aultrust is to contribute through building meaningful relationships with community groups. PoMoArts has been a pillar of the Port Moody community for more than 20 years, promoting and celebrating artistic initiatives for the City of the Arts. Supporting and promoting local artists is crucial in encouraging young artists to succeed, which is why our new project at 3000 Henry will feature an open gallery concept within the lobby to help showcase local art.”

Call for Proposals: Research Fellowships, Running with Concepts: The Mediatic Edition

image

Performance presentation by Alvin Luong at Running with Concepts: The Choreographic Edition, 2016.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS
Research Fellowships, Running with Concepts: The Mediatic Edition

A virtual public program, fellowship, and experimental conference
October 2020 – January 2021
Blackwood Gallery, University of Toronto Mississauga

Deadline for Proposals to Participate: September 8, 2020
Full program will be announced in late September 2020

With Guest Presenters: Emma Gilchrist, Rick Harp, Shalini Kantayya, Kite, Sean Lee, Pedro Neves Marques, Carmen Papalia, Karyn Pugliese, Tiara Roxanne, Lewis Raven Wallace, and more to be announced.

Running with Concepts: The Mediatic Edition, the sixth edition of the Blackwood’s hybrid educational event, bridges recent and ongoing Blackwood programming and publishing on spectatorship, animatic technologies, and media ecologies. Interrogating the contexts, conditions, and forces that modulate, arbitrate, and disrupt knowledge-production and political action, The Mediatic Edition unfolds as an online durational event with a concurrent fellowship program taking place across October 2020–January 2021. Participants bring expertise from emergent and established media disciplines whose methodologies can shape artistic practice: newer movements in data sovereigntydata governance, and citizen science develop models for participation and engagement; social media usersmeme-makers, and decolonial map-makers work within and against existing platforms to create counter-narratives; and critical journalists question the norms and epistemologies on which their discipline is founded. Across a durational online format, Running with Concepts: The Mediatic Edition asks: how can we intervene in and interrogate the conditions that mediate knowledge production and political action? What intersectional and cross-sectoral approaches to data and data ethics do we need now? How can artistic research engage with the interfaces and platforms that constitute our mediated environment? How can we better comprehend and work within our always-mediated conditions of spectatorship?

Foundational to the Running with Concepts model is the inclusion of practitioners from diverse fields at various levels of their careers, with mentorship, dialogue, and the workshopping of ideas built into the hybrid conference model. For the first time, this year’s virtual edition of Running with Concepts includes a paid research fellowship, geared at supporting the research practice of emerging practitioners, and providing mentorship for in-progress projects. Eight research fellows will follow the program from October 2020–January 2021. Fellows will be expected to:

  • present work once in digital form (e.g. as an online text, film screening, workshop, performance, or other virtual presentation hosted on the Blackwood Gallery’s website)
  • participate in three closed sessions with mentors (invited artists, researchers, and media-makers)
  • attend the virtual program of time-limited broadcasts and live online programs throughout duration of Running with Concepts: The Mediatic Edition
  • contribute one short post reflecting on the event to the Blackwood Gallery’s web feed

Research fellows are paid an honorarium of $1500 CAD.

Most public programs will be made available throughout a 72-hour period, enabling asynchronous viewing, access from various time zones, and closed captioning. Some sessions (e.g. workshops and performances) will be live, taking place in Eastern Standard Time.

Please see the full program schedule and Call for Proposals for more information.

For information on previous editions of Running with Concepts, please see The Empathic EditionThe Choreographic Edition and The Geologic Edition.

Proposals for Fellowships must include:

  • A 250-word description of your project or research trajectory, including the type of presentation you have in mind. We welcome a broad response to the notion of presentation (especially in consideration of online formats) which could take the shape of a talk, text-based contribution, performance-for-the-camera, film screening, workshop, demonstration, conversation, series of images, social media project, etc.
  • Include a 150-word bio and support material directly linked to proposal (for example: 3–5 minute video, 5 images, up to 2 pages of text—e.g. excerpts of a case study, score, or script)
  • Identify technical requirements for presentation on Blackwood Gallery’s website and the preferred amount of time required (5–30 minutes)

Participants from a wide range of disciplines and backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Graduate students and emerging artists, writers, and organizers will be given priority. Proposals from local and international contributors are welcome.

Art locations prioritize the commissioning of exterior installations, but the selection committee is also open to interior artwork. See the Request for Qualifications PDF for artwork location options.

Budget: $61,000

Instructional Technology Center

The renovation will transform the building's connection to campus with a new art gallery, student collaboration lounge, and 40-person conference room.

The ITC selection committee has identified values and goals for the artwork, including highlighting activities within the building; relating technology/computer science to the creative fields of art and visual communication; representing cultural diversity at WOU; recognizing the connectivity of the building's history and future creativity.

About Gallery TPW:
Gallery TPW is a leading artist-run centre dedicated to exhibiting underrepresented artistic and curatorial practices. Founded as The Toronto Photographers Workshop in 1977, Gallery TPW was created by a group of fifty artists and curators who were passionate about the need to support photography as an art form. As conversations about contemporary art practice evolved and photography gained legitimacy, the gallery expanded its medium-specific mandate to include new forms of imaging and time-based work. In the 1980s, when a new wave of artists joined, the gallery began to also address issues related to feminism, Latin American liberation struggles and LGBTQ rights. Since its inception, Gallery TPW has exhibited the work of more than a thousand artists, regularly advocated on behalf of the arts community, and developed an outstanding curatorial program.

Most recently, Gallery TPW is emerging from a period of transition and self-reflection. Once again, a community of artists is rallying together to affirm the gallery’s vision and values. Building on our legacy, we are asking ourselves: How does an artist-run centre, with our history, best serve its communities today? While our core values remain resolute, we are reimagining our role in the present context.
