2nd Issue August 2020

Editorial

Today we are happy to announce our new virtual dialogue series on Covid-19: "National and Local Coping Strategies following the Covid-19 Pandemic". The first event is already on 3 September, focusing on food-chain resilience in India. Also in the pipeline are events on smallholder farmers in South Africa, Small Island States, activism in Latin America and  more. A more detailed overview will follow soon! We are also pleased to see that  our latest blog post has been quite popular on social media, and we can announce that a new issue of our journal, the EJDR, is out. As usual, we also appreciate your interest in our picks of calls, vacancies, online activities, publications, and news further below. Today's topical focus is on peace and conflict.
New on our Blog: Utopia instead of "Development" Goals
It is time to abandon “development” goals and demand a post-2030 Utopia:
The authors of our latest blog post argue that the SDGs will fail to tackle nowadays global crises, as they leave the core problem untouched: "‘Development’, as a discourse and practice, with its colonial past and present, and its adherence to a Eurocentric yardstick to which all societies need to measure up." As an alternative they suggest a "global utopia that is simple, yet complex at the same time: A good life must be possible for everyone (human and non-human beings), in different locations, at different times and according to endogenous definition of needs." Food Chain Resilience in India during the Covid-19 Pandemic, 3 September, 14.00 CET
Sudha Narayanan from the Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR) will present findings from research on food and agricultural markets in India post-lockdown. Despite the early confusion, anxiety, and disruptions, there is now widespread consensus in India that the agrifood system has been surprisingly resilient. Yet, large constituencies remain vulnerable. While consumers face rising prices, producers have seen prices collapse for several commodities. Food insecurity remains widespread. Providing continued and effective relief must remain a priority for the Indian government in the coming months. Read more and register
