As you might know, I have a list on my phone called “nice things” where I record passing experiences that make me happy (it inspired this newsletter and my zine). Sometimes they’re big (a friend having a baby), sometimes they’re small (drinking wine from a can), but they’re usually pretty wholesome. I also have another list called, “stuff that makes me properly laugh”.
That list is largely made up of intensely insulting things my friends say to each other. But sometimes it features moments from popular culture that I find equally nourishing. The “nice things” list brings me a lot of joy and comfort when I feel down. But the “properly funny” list can bring me out of even the most eviscerating bad mood. It’s tough to be sad when you’re laughing so hard your boyfriend runs into the room because he thinks you’re hysterically crying/you just heard your parents are dead (true story).
The past week wasn’t amazing for me. Lockdown felt especially oppressive, and 2020 particularly gruelling. But putting this list together really did make me feel a lot better today. It reminded me that yes, the world is crazy in a bad way. But she’s also crazy in a good way—AKA in the way that allows this to happen.
In no specific order, here are a bunch of very funny things.
