August 2020: Back to School


We hope this finds our readers healthy and safe. This has been a time of tremendous change; amidst the COVID-19 outbreak, our research and learning environment has been largely transformed, with new services and resources being developed over the summer. The bulk of this Newsletter will contain updates on some of the *NEW* resources and services available from the libraries.

Library Services & Resources
Library Access
  • The Burke Library physical space remains closed to students and faculty
  • For archives and rare book research, view the Special Collections page
 
Borrowing & Returning
  • There is currently no BorrowDirect lending or delivery
  • Books can be returned at Butler Library (not at the Burke)
  • For those off-campus with books to return, see details here
  • Due dates have been universally pushed to October 2nd
  • Regular late fines and account holds from spring have been removed
  • Renew books, check due dates status at My Library Account
 
Scanning & Electronic Delivery
  • The Libraries now offer Scanning for access to portions of materials
  • Scans of portions of books may be requested through Interlibrary Loan
Search CLIO and click the Scan or Pick-up request links when present, for any item at the Burke or in any of the the Columbia University Libraries:

Pick-up Service
  • Pick-up service is available on-campus (including ReCAP/Offsite materials)
  • ReCAP/Offsite materials must be picked up at Butler Library (not the Burke)
Staff like Jeffrey Wayno, Collection Services Librarian at the Burke Library, are equipped for safe and socially-distanced Pick-up in the Rotunda:

Online Collections
  • Your Libraries Online highlights digital collections, including ebooks and multimedia items
  • With HathiTrust, over 40% more online versions of print materials are available
  • Check CLIO for expanded access to e-resources
 
Course Readings & Learning
  • There will be no print Course Reserves (3-hour loans) in Fall 2020
  • Please review your syllabi, and check for required readings in advance
  • Faculty and students should communicate about readings and expectations
  • Update your UNI/Password at Manage My UNI to ensure continued access

Anti-Racism Resources in the Libraries
We at the Burke Library support the ongoing movement towards anti-racism in our community -- at Union and Columbia, in New York, and around the world. The following sites compile recommended books, films, articles, podcasts, and justice-oriented organizations, for those wishing to broaden their horizonst. Both focus on e-resources with links in the CLIO Catalog:

Black Lives Matter International reading list (from Columbia University Libraries, originally published in the Global Studies Blog), with a focus on e-resources in the CLIO Catalog, and a global scope, featuring works on recent and historical movements for Black lives in the U.S. and around the world, with categories for different global regions:

Getting Your Bearings with the Burke Library (Wednesday September 9th at 4pm)
This online workshop aims to help users feel "right at home" in the new [and mostly virtual] library environment. Learn about online services and resources to support your research and learning, and hear from librarians about what's new in the libraries for Fall 2020.

Open to all library users, especially regular Burke visitors and Union Theological Seminary students, faculty, and staff (registration is required).

Let's Use CLIO (offered weekly, various days/times)
Virtual hands-on workshop series, facilitated by librarians in various schools and departments, with practical hands-on activities to brush up on the basics of finding e-books, databases, Research Guides, and more through the libraries.

Open to all Columbia University Libraries users and departments (registration required).
