Fireweed is at the finish line...

Here in Alaska, locals mark the end of summer and change in seasons with nature- the fireweed, a beautiful pink and purple bloom of flowers. When the bloom reaches the tip-top of the Fireweed plant, we can sense that Autumn is in the air. Many of you are marking this change in season with a very different tune - heading back to school in different circumstances than we are used to. Whether you are teaching in-person, hybrid, or online this fall, remember that you are not alone and that the work you do for our students each and every day is valued beyond words. THANK YOU!

This month’s intentional design resources are made in house! I’m excited to share 2 ongoing TUP projects. Check them out and share the love:

Home Learning Project Planner

This one is designed especially for those of you parents taking the leap into Homeschool or Home Learning this fall. Last Spring, I teamed up with Homer’s Connections Homeschool and a couple of rockstar homeschool parents to design this Project-Based Learning framework for Home Learning - the goal is to support families in doing skills-based, place-based, PROJECT-based learning in the homeschool environment.

If you are enrolled in Connections, check out this great opportunity to use your vendor funds to consult with me on designing your own project.

Climate Action Project Toolkit

I am SO excited to finally share with you the official link to the Climate Action Project Toolkit- this one is for educators and families. I teamed up with Green Island Films to take their incredible 3-part documentary series on Climate Change in Hawaii and build climate literacy focused projects for middle schoolers.

  • Check out the Toolkit at hiclimateprojects.org
  • This is a set of FIVE PBL projects that address different issues that arise in the film - from sea level rise, flooding, big data, planting trees and carbon footprint.
    • Watch Episode 1 here

    • This fall, our focus is on soft-launching this toolkit, spreading the word, and supporting teachers in adapting the projects and trying them out with their students! Even if you don’t live in Hawaii, or teach middle school, there is flexibility in these projects for you and your students. If you try a project, LET US KNOW!

Last month, I wrote a piece for PBL Works’ Blog on changing up our definition of personalized learning. I’ll leave it here with you as food for thought.

Until next month,
