Fencing WA Competitions

Competition Time - for old hands and newbies

Now that fencing is back up and running in WA, don't forget about state and club competitions! If you haven't tried state competitions before, this is a good time to get involved. Club handicaps are a great starting point. Cavs fencers are always happy to help newcomers, and there are lots of members who can give you advice about state comps as well.

Fencing WA competitions
This Wednesday 19 August is the deadline to register for the next under-15 and under-20 competitions, which will be held this weekend (22 and 23 August).

Keep an eye on the FWA website for upcoming competition dates: https://www.fencingwa.com/competition-calendar. There are competitions scheduled for U17 in September; veteran and junior (U20) in October; and open, U13 and U15 in November. Remember, if there aren't enough entries for a comp, then it has to be cancelled (e.g. U13 competitions earlier this month). So get involved!

All state competitions need to be registered for online - you can get to them from the FWA calendar above. Click on the calendar item and scroll down to get to the RegisterNow link. This link also carries information about Fencing WA affiliation. You will also need to have full kit including fencing breeches - ask at Cavs about hiring gear if you do not have all your own.

Fencing WA Awards
Every year, Fencing WA hosts a social event which includes presentations of awards to fencers across a number of age categories. This year, many categories have had no interstate competitions due to COVID-19, so WA competition entries will have even more impact than usual!

Fencing WA President Sharon Dale sent this message:

We would like to advise that FWA intends to still award state championships at the end of the year assuming we are able to continue to be able to hold state competitions as per the semester 2 calendar we have circulated. Obviously if we have to shut down fencing should the situation change in the state we may need to review this but we carry on until that happens.

Under the ranking rules national competition  results from last year will drop off the ranking as the date they were held passes. This means only National Senior/Veteran results from last November 2019 and Junior results from February 2020 will be considered for the rankings. So this year State Competition Results in a number of championships will be the only results counting to championship rankings. This will be a very unique situation and we would hope Clubs and coaches would encourage fencers at their clubs to take up the opportunity to take part in state competitions this semester.

Club Handicaps
We are running club handicap competitions on Saturdays in each of foil, epee, and sabre as usual, though with a few catch-up competitions due to the earlier shut-down. They are open to all and do not carry a fee, but you need to arrive before 1pm on a competition day to be able to compete.

If you haven't tried one before, jump on in! Speak with other fencers at your next fencing session to find out more about it and if it could suit you. You'll find that everyone helps out new fencers.

You can find handicap dates on Facebook or on printed sheets in the electric equipment cabinet at a fencing session. Upcoming are epee 29 Aug, sabre 26 Sep, and foil 3 Oct.

Looking forward to seeing you on the piste!
