In this e-news: virtual worlds, sleep, teddy bears and where to find the best meal in town in Condobolin.
RuralUP NEWS
Although we aren't running any face-to-face events at the moment, we are busy planning a number of activities so as soon as we are able, we'll be up and running!
One such activity is providing support to a Rugby Carnival in Bathurst carnival for men and women from regional towns as a way to encourage them to continue to exercise and stay fit during the winter months.
When this takes place, we will need volunteers for player medical assessments, Head Injury Assessment Officials, medical support staff, Community Health Checks and a Teddy Bear Hospital.
Also, work is progressing quickly on an exciting Virtually Rural platform where students can access information on many of the rural locations they can do placements, such as:
  • interviews with local health practitioners
  • videos from students who have been there
  • tours of hospitals and clinics
  • links to information to help you settle in and more...

RURAL UP PEOPLE ...
Local newspapers are a great way to raise awareness of research projects and potentially recruit participants. A group of Year 4 students used this channel to promote their study on the relationship between sleep and mental health with an article in the Western Advocate this week (below).
Here are some tips for writing for newspapers:
  • Write the article in the standard format for Media Releases (an internet search will list many examples)
  • Choose a catchy headline
  • Use some direct quotes
  • Provide a good quality photo or two
  • Provide contact details for follow up

... PLACES
"CONDO" TO THE LOCALS
Two Fourth Year students, Houston and Kevin, are doing a placement in Condobolin at the Aboriginal Health Centre.
In our conversation, we found out they've been pretty busy. They have sat in on GP consultations and even conducted a patient consultation and examination themselves, with the specialist on the other end of the phone.
They've joined the gym, visited the local Men's Shed, and they're off to the farm of one of the centre's staff this weekend. Listen to our full conversation here.
THE RuralUP TRACKER
A new video has been added to the RuralUP YouTube Channel about Teddy Bear Hospitals. The rural team has a large collection of equipment and props they use to engage children in health awareness and education.
This short video explains why we run a Teddy Bear Hospital, how it is set up and things students can do when volunteering at one.
Hopefully we will be able to take students out and about again soon. In the meantime, they can grab their popcorn and watch the video so they're ready to volunteer!
Students can collect 2 points in the RuralUP Tracker by filling in a Virtually Rural Record (the questions aren't an exact fit for this video, but do your best!).
RURAL UNDERGRADUATE PATHWAY
[RuralUP]
In short, the Rural Undergraduate Pathway (RuralUP) is designed to allow students in the School of Medicine to explore opportunities in rural areas as an undergraduate. Through RuralUP, students gain an understanding of what it is like to work in rural areas and develop their peer and professional networks. If you would like to know more, see the RuralUP Flyer.
