Dane County Extension Happenings
August 2020
As we move into late summer and continue to deal with the pandemic, many are thinking about how to safely visit loved ones and making plans for a safe return to school either virtually or in person. Dane County Extension Educators continue to closely monitor the impact of COVID-19 and are providing virtual programming and developing new resources to help meet the needs of individuals, families, farms, businesses and communities. This newsletter highlights a few of the programs and resources available from Extension. Please check our website often for the latest on program updates and new resources.

Decision Guide Available to Help Determine
When it is Safe to Visit Others

"Quaranteam"? "Double bubble"? These terms are showing up more and more in the media as individuals and families make decisions about when they will start to see other people again. In other families, questions are bubbling up about when and how it will be safe to get much needed support, like childcare or respite care.

The decision to see others or engage in activities is very personal. To help individuals and families think through these choices, Extension's Life Span Program has developed a decision guide. The guide walks users through the decision-making process, helping you to weigh your own risks and benefits of interacting with others in your home or in public spaces. Those who prefer a more interactive tool can download a worksheet and/or flowchart that will take you through a series of questions and considerations.

FoodWIse Launches Virtual Nutrition Program

Dane County FoodWIse educators are currently teaching Eating Smart Being Active virtual classes that are open to SNAP-Ed eligible Wisconsin parents. And the youth nutrition educators are partnering with 4-H to provide weekly virtual learning activities to both youth and adults throughout the month of August. These fun, interactive, 30 minute quick lessons include Simple Wraps and Sandwiches; Fruit Burst Fun and Love Tacos for youth and Family Time with FoodWIse for parents.

Youth Nutrition Educators are staying in close communication with Dane County principals and teachers as they prepare to launch virtual education in their classrooms. We are ready to be “in the classroom” as much as possible by offering our usual nutrition lessons and activities in the virtual format throughout the school year.

If you or your family would like to participate in the 4-H lessons and activities (not just nutrition!) during August please click here to register for classes that interest you.

4-H Summer Showcase a Success!

When the Dane County Fair had to be cancelled for 2020 the Summer Showcase committee including Lisa Curley, 4-H Program Coordinator, Dane County Fair staff and 4-H volunteers organized a series of events and new opportunities for youth to celebrate and share their 4-H project work with others this summer. Visit our website to check out the following:

An online 4-H Project Gallery – Dane County 4-H members are sharing a picture and description of their projects on the Dane County 4-H website. This is a way for youth to share their accomplishments and reflect on what they have learned this year in 4-H.

Baked Potato Challenge –  We all missed visiting the 4-H baked potato stand at the fair.  But check out the delicious and creative potatoes that were submitted in this year's virtual baked potato challenge.

4-H Virtual Talent Showcase – Youth have prepared videos performing a talent to be featured on the Dane County 4-H website!

Thank you to the following for making the Summer Showcase a success!

Extension Listens, Responds and Shares
Farmer Needs related to COVID-19

The demand for on-the-ground vegetable farm information related to COVID-19 is coming from both local farmers and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. At the local level, direct market farmers need resources on a wide range of topics from employee safety to online marketing.  Dane County Extension educator Claire Strader partnered with the FairShare CSA Coalition to address this need through a series of nine online grower gatherings throughout the early part of the season. The gatherings were well attended by farmers in Dane County and, thanks to the online platform, farmers throughout Wisconsin and into Illinois and Missouri were able to participate.

Strader was also invited to contribute to a COVID-19 Response Plan Template for Fruit and Vegetable Farms spearheaded by University of Minnesota Extension where the farmer-to-farmer examples from those gatherings helped provided real-world illustrations of how farms can safely adapt their businesses during this crisis.

On the federal level, the USDA is trying to get a handle on what is happening for small farms throughout the country.  Strader was invited to speak at two sessions in July.  The first was organized through the Agricultural Marketing Service and focused on how Community Support Agriculture (CSA) farms have been affected by and are adapting to COVID-19.  The second, organized through the Local and Regional Food System Team and was attended by approximately 200 USDA employees throughout the country.  The focus on this second session was on how small farms can meet the surge in consumer demand for local produce and keep interest in local foods though efforts like the new Local Food is Essential campaign.
