Climate Science Focus

Hello Partner Teachers, for this fall 2020 we will be focusing on supporting each other in learning more Climate Science and creating ways to bring it to your students* (mainly high school, but could be adapted for middle school).

Denise Keele (WMU professor and presenter of the EnROADS Climate Interactive tool at fall 2019 and summer 2020 workshops) and I will be offering a series of meetings and webinars so you can learn to facilitate the EnROADS Climate Workshop with your students.

The webinar below would be a great place to be introduced to the Climate Workshop concept if it is new to you.

Save the dates: Wednesdays, Sept. 9, 23, Oct. 7, 21, Nov. 4, 18 from 4:30-5:30pm if you are interested in participating.  More information, including an application will be coming soon.  I'm hoping to offer SCECHs and a stipend to support your participation.  We'll be following the Ambassador training program so you will watch the webinars on your own time and then we'll meet to practice, ask questions and support each other in learning how to facilitate this simulation.

-Kara

*We will also be sharing resources for all grade levels to teach and learn OUTDOORS!  So please don't feel left out if climate science is not in your curriculum.

Webinar about The En-ROADS Climate Workshop

Thursday, August 20, 2020

Register for a workshop

7-8 am or 2-3 pm EST

The En-ROADS Climate Workshop is a group experience which allows participants to visualize the impact of different climate solutions in real-time, using the En-ROADS Climate Solutions Simulator - a user-friendly climate model developed by Climate Interactive and MIT Sloan Sustainability Initiative.  The workshop conversation explores climate solution, co-benefits to address equity and justice (we call this "Multisolving"), and a powerful call to action.

The En-ROADS Climate Workshop is a free event (and a free tool), and is a great remote learning experience for people of all backgrounds and expertise.  We encourage you to invite co-workers, community groups, family, students to join us!

Resource for Re-opening Schools - Outdoor Classrooms and Environmental Education

This guide, developed by North American Association and Environmental Education (NAAEE) and members of its Affiliate Network, presents information and strategies for how community-based environmental and outdoor education programs can help schools to equitably reopen during and after the COVID-19 crisis.
Click here: https://naaee.org/eepro/resources/eeguidance-reopening-schools
Reopening schools will require new or modified procedures for everything from classroom configuration and educational plans to arrival and departure schedules, transportation, and health screenings. Schools will need to attend to more than just physical well-being and academic learning. COVID-19 disruptions are causing a dramatic increase in childhood trauma, creating additional strain on educators and families. Community-based environmental and outdoor education programs can help to address these dire needs and discrepancies through innovative partnerships and educational investments and policies.
