Opening Prayer
Let us Pray

O God, who strengthens weak hands and fearful hearts, pour into us the same power that quickened Jesus’ pulse in the tomb, that even amid failure, sorrow and fear, we may be bearers of your wholeness, healing, and joy. Amen.

Reflection on Sunday’s Readings

Reflection on the message by The Very Reverend Cynthia Briggs Kittredge at the Washington National Cathedral on August 9, 2020.

Rev. Kittredge referenced two stories where "superheroes" from the Bible were invited by God to step-out in faith, when they were afraid.
  • Elijah was directed to anoint Hazael as king over Aram, to anoint Jehu as king over Israel, and to anoint Elisha as prophet in his place. (1 Kings 19:9-18)
  • Peter was invited to step out of the boat and walk on water to meet Jesus.  (Matthew 14:22-33)
In both cases, God led them to rely on Him, to have faith, as they performed acts.  And, we are asked to do the same.
Rev. Kittredge described it as "little faith."  But God works with our "little faith."

What are we being called to do that requires a "little faith?"

Volunteers Needed for Church of the Incarnation’s
“Open Table” Ministry

Saint Patrick’s mission is focused on feeding the hungry, housing the homeless and being a resource for the community.  The following ministry is very much in line with our mission.

Please consider being a part of this much needed service to our community.

Thank you, Priest Doyle, Rector, Saint Patrick’s

The Church of the Incarnation's Sunday Open Table needs volunteers under 65 to keep offering food for hungry neighbors during Covid crisis. The majority of local meal programs have canceled their programs under fear of Covid and open table is struggling to adjust. The program is practicing social distancing, as well as providing masks and gloves to volunteers to protect volunteers and guests. Please sign up at incarnation.ivolunteer.com

A little about Sunday Open Table:
Sunday Open Table - Church of the Incarnation

Sunday Open Table celebrated its 10th year of service to our community this year. Since early in 2010 we have served over 100 people each Sunday with a meal and a smile. This mission has been possible due to continuing support from this congregation in terms of cash donations, in-kind donations and so very many volunteer hours.

We have adjusted our service in the times of Covid to include a bag lunch with two sandwiches and hard boiled eggs and snack bar along with a hot  cup of coffee. We have strict safety protocols in place during the time we hand out these bags on Sundays between 7:00-8:30 am. It takes a lot of people to make this program work. During the week our shoppers pick up the needed supplies of food and accessories.

On Saturday our prep crew of 4-6 people makes over 100 sandwiches and boils a lot of eggs. On Sunday a crew of 8 puts on the finishing touches and then serves with a smile (hidden behind masks, of course.) We are always looking for a few extra volunteers on Sunday. It is a rewarding task and you will know how appreciated this program is for the un-sheltered and needy in our community. If you would like to volunteer for one Sunday or more (right now looking for people under age 65), please go to incarnation.ivolunteer.com. In addition to serving food, we could really use someone(s) to help distribute clothing during the same time a few Sundays per month.

Thank you!
Peace,

-Paul

How to Be a Crazy Christian with Michael Curry

Course Summary
This is a course with a warning label: All who enter here, expect to be transformed. Episcopal bishop Michael Curry is an inspiring and enthusiastic reformer with a clear call to reinvigorate the Church. Many people have experienced Christ's transforming power through Bishop Curry's ministry.
Course Description

Garrison Keillor once said going to church makes someone a Christian about as much as sitting in a garage makes someone a Chevrolet. Bishop Michael Curry, Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, has a heart for reawakening believers to the tremendous gift and challenge of giving our all to follow Jesus. His term for this kind of person is a Crazy Christian.

In this 45 minute class, Bishop Curry will tell us:

  • What Is a Crazy Christian?
  • Why Being a Crazy Christian is Easy - and Hard
  • Habits of a Crazy Christian
  • Giving Yourself Permission

This course is ideal for those who are looking to be encouraged and challenged in their Christian faith.

Re-Imagining Policing

Calls for reforming policing in our country are being made in almost every municipality.  Here in Sonoma County, the Sonoma County Supervisors and the Santa Rosa City Council are diligently working to do this.  Their goals are to make Public Safety more effective and better serve all members of our Community.

The County is sponsoring an initiative to strengthen and enhance homeless and mental health services, an urgent need of some of our neediest neighbors.  These services will keep individuals off the streets and out of the criminal justice system, make them contributing members to the Community, and free up policing resources to focus on criminals and crimes.  In addition, the County is seeking citizen approval to strengthen Community oversight of the Sheriff Department.

The City is exploring ways to shift police roles from the public agency that answers all 911 calls for help to an agency that answers calls that specifically need an armed uniformed officer.  The benefit of this shift in roles, Re-Imagining policing, will allow the call/need to be responded to by personnel best suited to address the situation.

The police department has researched very successful programs, in cities across the nation, that are working to reduce calls to police, allowing them to focus on the calls they are specifically best suited and trained to handle.  The remaining calls are directed to responders who have the training to provide more effective service to the callers and the person in need. These programs have reduced crime, saved the cities substantial money, and greatly improved Public Safety.

One program, Santa Rosa is considering, is called CAHOOTS.  It was established in Eugene Oregon, a city similar in size to Santa Rosa.  The main tenets of CAHOOTS, which stands for Crisis Assistance Helping Out On The Streets are:
  • Provides support to Eugene Police Department personnel by responding to social service calls, including crisis counseling.
  • The two person responding CAHOOTS teams consist of a mental health nurse and an EMT.
  • The team initiates contact and completes the transportation for intoxicated or under the influence of a controlled substance person, individuals experiencing a mental health crisis, or a disoriented person.
  • CAHOOTS scope of services includes assisting the public with emergency shelter resources, welfare checks, requests for non-emergency medical evaluation and transports, delivering emergency death notices, and transporting juveniles from the juvenile justice center to a youth shelter.
  • CAHOOTS provides 24/7 coverage for the City of Eugene
  • If there is any evidence of violence or weapons, then the CAHOOTS Team cannot respond.

Other similar models, being explored by the City, currently operate in  San Mateo, San Diego, Houston, San Antonio, and Memphis.

To participate in the local Community discussions about Re-Imagining Policing, attend, via Zoom, the Sonoma County Supervisors public meetings and the public meetings of the two bodies in Santa Rosa, working on the issue, the Public Safety Sub Committee and the City Council.   For the schedule, agenda, and Zoom information for these meetings click on these links:

Love Thy Neighbor

"Lead me, guide me"
(Sung at the National Cathedral this past Sunday)

A Message from the Panned Giving Ministry

Jesus had a will. Not the conventional kins, but he left explicit instructions for the distribution of his love in the Scriptures. It is all explained in the New Testament. How about your will or trust? Is your love for God described through the gifts you make?

Excerpt from the Episcopal Foundation, "Let's Get To It" manual.
