The Virtual 3D Convention is about to begin, 4 days of great 3D events online - Register Now to keep up to date.
Plus other 3D activities and competitions.

Virtual 3D-con 2020,
this years American 3D convention,
is online Thursday through Sunday
Virtual 3D-Con 2020

Our 3D colleagues in America always put on a great convention lasting almost a week, with hours of 3D show projection, workshops explaining the latest 3D cameras and digital 3D techniques. A large trade fair with many dealers with table after table of historical stereo cards and fun photographic excursions to the local attractions. Due to COVID19 Pandemic this years physical convention planned to take place in Tacoma, USA has obviously had to be cancelled. But the organisers have been working extremely hard in transferring as much of the 3D entertainment and education to online activities taking place over the next 4 days (Thursday 13th August through to Sunday 16th).

The 3d-con.com schedule is full with workshops, Special Interest Groups (SIG) and speakers, mostly on Zoom; 3D Theater via YouTube, etc. See the website for updated schedules and other information, look under the "Virtual Convention" tab on the left of the Home Page for links to the latest LIVE event starting on Thursday.

Note that the published times are in PDT – Pacific Daylight Time (Tacoma/LA USA). 8 hours behind British Summer Time (BST).  So the 1pm PDT start on Thursday is 9pm BST for those of us in the UK. (Just Google the time you are interested in to make sure you are getting it right. E.g. "1pm PDT to BST" .)  Be prepared for some late nights to join all the fun, although some of the activities will be recorded and available to watch at a more convenient time over the weekend - such as the 3D Theatre shows.

Registration is strongly encouraged, and is open throughout the convention, but sooner is better. Registering will allow organisers to make email contact before and during the convention, if needed. Basic registration is FREE, but with paid options including the goody bag packet (which will now be mailed after the convention) or also with a years discounted membership of the National Stereoscopic Association (NSA) which includes six issues a year of their fantastic Stereo World magazine with many historical stereo card articles. Online registration is via the "whos coming" site, and you will find this link near the bottom of the Registration page.

Several of our members have 3D shows in the 3D Theatre which will be broadcast over YouTube over several days. There will be a separate link for an Anaglyph version or 3D TV squeezed side-by-side version. These presentations should be available to watch at your convenience for the remainder of the convention weekend.

There is also a special section of talks on HISTORY OF STEREOSCOPIC PHOTOGRAPHY, these will only be available as LIVE talks at the publicised time. Several of our members are presenting from the UK.

On Saturday there are Keynote talks again as LIVE only events by Denis Pellerin of London Stereoscopic Company and Suzanne Lloyd - granddaughter of Harold Lloyd, silent movie star and prolific 3-D photographer.

Workshops teaching the latest techniques or discussing the latest equipment make up a large part of the schedule along with Special Interest Groups (SIGs) where you can join in on a live chat with like minded 3D enthusiasts on a variety of topics from View-Master to VR.

Also keep on eye out for the unveiling of the Virtual 3D Art Gallery and 3D Trade Fair.

To get involved in the social side of the event keep an eye on the web site and ask to join the Virtual 3D-Con Facebook group.

So put the kettle on, put your feet up and sit back for 4 days (nights) of 3D education and entertainment.

Online Group Chats
Member web cam views from online meetings

Many Stereoscopic Society members have been enjoying catching up in small groups online and sharing 3D photos or discussing 3D equipment.

Hosted by various members online meetings are being held regularly on Saturday afternoons, along with some Wednesdays afternoons and some Wednesday and Sunday evenings.  Contact Colin Metherell for a full list of time and dates and login details.  You do not need a webcam or microphone to participate, you can just watch.

In my capacity of Folio Groups Coordinator, I produce a Folio Groups Show and an AV-5 Show for presentation at the Society’s annual convention; they are also shown at the regional meetings.  In these troubled times, it seems that what was once an essential activity within the Society, Folio Groups have largely become inactive.  The circulation of postal folios is being handled with caution and cancellation of the Convention and regional meetings have thwarted the showing of members work in all forms.

Over the years there have been some attempts by members, to establish an online platform where images can be uploaded and viewed; unfortunately these have not been well supported - but members are now well versed in digital photography and online activities.  Perhaps now is the time to refresh our online efforts for all our sakes; if you feel that you may like to contribute to an online platform, or wish to make any observations on this matter,  please contact me at  groups@stereoscopicsociety.org.uk

3D Things To Do

I hope you are all well in these strange times we find ourselves in. I am sure that during lockdown you have all been catching up on some reading about 3D or making some new 3D images or videos.

John Peck our Journal Editor would appreciate articles or 3D images for future journals.

Our society President - Colin Metherell has been busy putting together his own web site of 3D images of his travels and orchids : natureandtravel3d.com

Through out lockdown the New York Stereoscopic Association put together a weekly entertaining hour meeting each Saturday and in September intend to continue these for the foreseeable future.
You can watch the recording of their previous meeting on their Vimeo channel, and I would recommend signing up to their newsletter from their website so that you are kept informed of the links and ID numbers of the future meetings.

A new 3D club has recently formed : Brooklyn Stereoscopic Association they are also doing online meetings and recording them so they can be watched later. Their founding members are predominently collectors of various 3D items and images, whcih has made their first two meetings very interesting and different to most 3D clubs. Check out their site and may be sign up to their newsletter so you are informed when the meetings will be.

The London Stereoscopic Company currently has 50% OFF their excellent 3D books. As well as several talks as part of Virtual 3D Con mentioned above they are starting doing other online talks. To know when sign up to their newsletter as a Friend of LSC.

Rebecca from LSC has also begun her own blog with many interesting articles : stereoscopy.blog

The society has accounts on social media these are mainly used for putting out notifications under the account names @stereoscopicsociety on Facebook and Instagam or @stereoscopicsoc on Twitter.

Facebook has many groups you can join to discuss a variety of topics on 3D, in some respects similar to Groups.io but lots of images are easily included.
Instagram has a particularly good following of people posting side by side 3D images especially followers of London Stereoscopic Company who post including the hashtag #teamstereoscopy.

I will add that if you aren't already using social media it can become addictive and time consuming.

The Photography Show which should have been at the NEC earlier this year is now going to be a virtual online event in September.
Check out their web site for full details and to register. Member Tim Goldsmith will be presenting on different methods for using a 2D camera to take 3D photos as part of the Analogue spotlight.

Professional Photographer and 3D Enthusiast - Andrew Brooks has created some interesting photography tutorials on YouTube.
Watching his tutorials on Smart Phone photography revealed some advanced Exposure techniques I was not aware my phone had.

Bob Pryce mentions that he is able to access Amateur Photographer magazine and other interesting magazines for free online via an affiliation from his local library. May be your local library has a similar arrangement in place.
