Help Select and Shape the Class of 2025: Be an MMI Evaluator

Previous MMI Evaluators: Drs. Carol Galper, Karen Lutrick, Karyn Kolman and Myra Muramoto

"I think as a member of an academic department of family medicine in a state with a primary care shortage, it is imperative that we have a role in helping select the members of the next medical school class. Participating in MMIs is a fun and easy way to do this."  ~Karyn Kolman, MD, associate professor; vice chair of education

August 12, 2020

Dear FCM Faculty,

I'd like to invite you to be a Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) Evaluator for the 2020-21 application cycle, which begins on August 15th and runs through February, 2021.

The Office of Admissions is hosting a training for Evaluators from 10 – 12:00 p.m. this Saturday, Aug. 15. (The training will also be recorded and available to all Evaluators on Monday, August 17.) If you are interested in being an MMI Evaluator for 2020-21, OR attending the Evaluator Training on 8/15, please email Megan Sorenson. You can view the MMI schedule here

This year, COM-T medical school interviews will take place entirely online, via the Admissions Application Portal (currently under construction). Please note that a pro Zoom account is needed (UArizona license is fine).

What does being an MMI Evaluator entail?
  • You will go through one Evaluator Training (2 hours, via Zoom meeting or via a recording).
  • You decide how many interviews/evaluations you want to do. View schedule.
  • Each interview/evaluation takes no more than about 1.5 hours of your time.
    • Interviews take place on Fridays from 12-1pm. You check-in at 11:30am, conduct the interview, and then complete and submit your evaluation through the portal by 2pm that day. View more details.
Questions? Please email Megan Sorenson.

Having our faculty participate in medical school admissions is so important to ensuring that FCM's values of primary care, health equity, social responsibility, and diversity and inclusion are well represented in our future colleagues. Myra and I are hoping this will be a record-setting year for FCM faculty's participation in MMI.

Thank you for your consideration!

Sincerely,

Tejal M. Parikh, MD
Assistant Dean, COM-Tucson Office of Admissions
Associate Professor, Family and Community Medicine

"I choose to be a secondary screener and participate in MMIs because I am dedicated to changing the face of our physician workforce to more accurately reflect the racial and ethnic makeup of our nation. My participation is driven by a desire to address inequities in education and medicine, and has given me insights into how to do this for our residency program in a more systematic way."

~Jessie Pettit, MD, IBCLC, associate professor; Alvernon residency program director

"Participating in the MMI has been a refreshing change from the old 30-minute interview experience. I love getting to see the diverse and talented candidates coming to interview at COM-T and playing a part in shaping the future classes of COM-T."

~Mari Ricker, MD, associate professor
