August 2020 Newsletter

Hi <<First Name>>,

Welcome to the August 2020 Joulescope newsletter.  This month, we have:

  • Major software update
  • Statistics computed on the instrument
  • Mooltipass - designed with Joulescope and now on Kickstarter
  • COVID-19 statement

Software Update

We recently released Joulescope UI 0.9.2.  Your software should automatically prompt you to download the update, and you can also directly download the release.

We are very excited about this release, which contains numerous changes based on the feedback and input from the Joulescope community.  The highlights include:

New "Dark" Theme

The Joulescope UI has a new look!  We hope you enjoy it as much as we do:
This new release also includes a "light" theme and a "system" theme.  The "system" theme is similar to the previous Joulescope UI look and feel.  If you want to change, open the Joulescope UI:
  1. Select File Preferences
  2. Select Profile "defaults"
  3. Select Appearance
  4. Select the Theme you want.

Markers Learn New Tricks

The waveform UI markers are more powerful and even easier to use.  New colors, improved automatic placement, moving using press-drag-release (in addition to press-release-drag-press-release), configurable text location, and new y-axis markers:
Troubleshooting a difficult problem using lots of markers?  Press the number key corresponding to the marker to bring the marker into view.

Frequency Analysis

Have a noisy signal?  Wondering what's causing it?  Frequency analysis can help you determine the frequencies present in your signal.  You can then match that strange 100 kHz noise characteristics with that 100 kHz switching regulator you have in your design.  Add dual markers, right-click (control-click on macOS) on a dual marker, then select AnalysisFrequency

Here is a 1 kHz sine wave with harmonics:

Other Notable Features

  • New toggle switch to turn OUT on & off
  • Save waveform to image files and copy to clipboard
  • Click on multimeter values to copy to clipboard
  • Press the "space bar" to start & stop streaming
  • Press arrow keys to navigate the waveform view
  • And more!
For the complete list, see the changelog.

Thank you to the Joulescope community for the fantastic feedback and suggestions.  Please keep them coming!

Statistics Computed on the Instrument

Joulescopes are USB-connected devices, and they relay all 2 million samples per second to the host computer.  That's a lot of data, especially when all you want is 2 Hz multimeter statistics.

This new software release includes a firmware update that supports statistics computation on the sensor-side of the Joulescope instrument.  This feature allows much, much lower data rates over USB, which means that you can connect up to 127 Joulescopes to one host computer.  Enable this mode in downsample_logging.py with the script's new "--source sensor" option.  Or try it out with a single Joulescope instrument from python:

    pip3 install -U joulescope
    joulescope statistics

We also have a new js110_statistics C library and application for collecting these 2 Hz statistics.  If you are writing a test automation framework using many Joulescopes or looking to perform long-term testing using custom software, this library is for you!

Mooltipass BLE Mini

We are seeing more products reaching the market designed using Joulescope.  Stephan Electronics used Joulescope to design and improve the Mooltipass BLE Mini.  The Mooltipass BLE Mini is a battery-powered device that provides secure credentials whenever you need them.  It's already met the funding goal on Kickstarter, and the campaign ends soon on Aug 22.  Check it out!
