BMC is building a dream team of organizers and community leaders.  Over the next two weeks we’ll be introducing you to each of these new additions to the BMC family.

First up, Michael Higgins, our new Senior Housing and Sustainability organizer. You can read more about the tenant organizing work he is doing on our website, and get in touch with him at mhiggins@brooklynmovementcenter.org.

What neighborhood are you from? Where do you live now?
I was raised and still live in the same building in Fort Greene, for now. I left Brooklyn for college but it's always been home for me.

What’s important to you? What is the one thing you want us to know about you personally?
Making the role of everyday people in social movements more clear is important to me. I don't think of myself as an activist per se, and my contribution to the social movements I'm a part of is much more as an organizer developing strategy. I see my value in both creating systems of communication and decision making.

What’s your job at BMC and what's the role you play in BMC’s Black liberation work?
My current position as BMC's Housing and Sustainability organizer is to both support a burgeoning tenant organizing initiative and organize against environmental injustice here. The threat of displacement is an ongoing obstacle to organizing our base and in the moment of crisis, it is part of my job to coordinate a front to stop evictions and address other  factors that are making our community members particularly susceptible to COVID-19.

What did you do before you got to BMC? What prepared you to do this work?
I was an organizer with FUREE, an organization that saw itself as part of a long movement against poverty and led by a base of older black women. As a FUREE former member, I valued being part of a movement and being accountable to a membership and other leaders. It also gave me appreciation for relationships in our work among members and how we move our work most when people feel connected to one another, not just to an organizer.

If you were reincarnated as an animal, what would it be and why?
It would probably be a goat. I think I can be very curious and observant of my surroundings, liking to wander through new places. I can also be very flexible as a part of a team and meet a number of different needs. I am a more picky eater though!
